One point of confusion is that in Isaacson's book when describing Steve's last day at Apple where he resigned, Forstall showed Jobs a "voice recognition app" that sounds an awful lot like Siri. I think it is the 3rd paragraph on pg. 558. Based on that paragraph, it doesn't sound like Jobs had lots of experience with Siri. When he said "I cracked it", I don't think he was referring to Siri.
