Title: Re: [Fed-Talk] Status of Java for Apple?
Hi Ekkehard,
There is one alternative in the form of the OpenJDK ( http://mail.openjdk.java.net/pipermail/announce/2013-March/000147.html). It makes more sense from a support perspective to have Oracle do the work, thus to use the Oracle Java 7 binaries that entail Java6 compatibility. The exception to this is if Oracle gets to a point where they are essentially unreliable.
One other group I expect to contribute to the OpenJDK project would be Google. The logic behind this is their Android and GWT products. Both products entail Java compilers and that was the root of the law suit between them and Oracle, lately. We shall see how that goes.

Java 6 ultimately comes from Oracle, and Oracle has ended public updates for Java 6 as of February 2013:

I've run into an issue with an application that only works with Java 6. I was under the impression Apple isn't doing any more updates for Java 6. I'm trying to find something that gives me a definitive answer one way or the other, but am coming up blank. If Apple IS going to support it, I need that info for a POAM. If they aren't, I need that info to encourage the developer to get cracking on a solution that uses Java 7.
