I saw this Java issue as of this morning. Short version: if you're on 10.7 or 10.8, use Firefox for now.
If your system doesn't require Java 7, you can also try reverting back to using Apple's Java 6 browser plug-in. Details on how to do that are here:

When I go to System Preferences and run the Java update it tells me I am running the latest version. When I go to the Java website and click am I running Java, the circle just keeps spinning and Java never loads.
