Yep, it's easy to get the wrong stuff! On my 10.8 machine I use MacPorts, so that is what seems to get used first (depend on PATH, of course).
marcuspro:~ allan$ openssl version
OpenSSL 1.0.0d 8 Feb 2011
marcuspro:~ allna$ which openssl
/opt/local/bin/openssl
marcuspro:~ allan$ /usr/bin/openssl version
OpenSSL 0.9.8r 8 Feb 2011
Try: /usr/bin/openssl version
On you Lion machine.

That version on your system did not come from Apple. Did you identify the origin of the OpenSSL update on your system ?
