Xsan hosted by 10.7 and 10.8 lose the requirement for the Apple spec Promise or old Xserve RAID units and allow any ALUA compliant storage. That has opened up a wide range of storage into the "supported" category. You could use storage other than Apple and Promise in the past, but if you ever called for support, Apple would tell you, "Sorry, that isn't supported" and you would be on your own.

We have a mixture of quite a few different vendors for various StorNext file systems without any problem. Everything from old Apple XRAIDs to EMC solutions. As long as the device can export a LUN, you should be fine.
