The Mac port of jOVAL Professional will use Java 1.6 out-of-the-box,
for two reasons:
1) We want to support customers who are still using Snow Leopard,
and there's no Java 1.7 for 32-bit OSX
2) Java 1.7 seems unable to properly interoperate with the native
Keyring, which we use to securely store credentials for remote scan
targets. The Java 1.6 implementation works perfectly.
My personal opinion is that it's too bad Apple handed the job of
implementing Java back to Oracle. Maybe we'll start experimenting
with OpenJDK.

I can think of only one VA website that requires Java and in all reality, it should not. There are a small handful badly built installers that require Java on the Mac that I can think of… Most everything that requires Java exists on servers (or should) that I can think of.
So short of using that one VA website, I disable Java in Safari unilaterally and frequently uninstall after using it for that website.
Any killer Java apps out there that makes you keep Java on your workstation ? On my server, yes. For development, sure. For the normal user?
