Dave,
Could you have corrupt preferences files, etc? We all have seen sporadic, otherwise unexplainable issues in the past where deleting and letting the app create new preferences files resolves them.

Thanks, it's kind of a comfort to know my problems aren't widespread. That means local fixes are much more likely to work. I sure would hate to dump my Time machine history, though.

I cannot replicate your problem. Sorry I don't have further paths to lead you down after I say that.

I've had more significant problems with this release so far than any other OS X release. The latest is problems and possibly corruption with Time Machine drives (that were created by machines rulling earlier Mac OS X releases). The backups
seem to just hang, and Disk Utilities takes an inordinate amount of time (in one case, 1tb drive, it's still running after 8 hours.)
Prior problems include the discovery that local synching of calendar and contacts is gone, I have to use some sort of cloud service for that. Then, when I set up iCloud, calendar synching hung leaving the local Calendar.app unusable. And there's the ongoing
problems connecting to OS X Server 3 (Mavericks version) with VPN.
All of these problems are ones that hit me directly, in applications i use every day. The backup problems are particularly worrisome.
