I use mine on the road when I don't have any other items plugged in --
use a "normal" reader with usb cable when in office/docked to cable farm.

I noticed none of the photos show this device in use.
At any given time my Macbook has a thunderbolt display adapter, printer
USB, firewire raid drive and a power supply attached. Additionally I
move data through the card slot. I can’t imagine either of these devices
being peripheral friendly unless an extender cord or USB hub were used
in conjunction with them. A corded device makes more sense for my work
environment and I believe for a mac in general.

Seem to recall that if a smart card reader conforms to standards, no
special drivers are needed. This new reader looks slick but the older
SCR requires no hardware specific software to support it vs any other
card reader. The "Mac drivers available" for the new one gives me pause.

I guess you've never seen the SCM Microsystems SCR3500 reader (now

It's perhaps not quite as elegant looking as the one you've found,
but it's smaller, because it uses a bifold design to achieve the full
size, instead of one piece.
And the venerable SCM brand readers are the most "compatible" smart
card readers around. Driverless on Windows 7/8, and works great with
PKard on OS X.

The company bills it as "the world's smallest smart card reader".
And it certainly is smaller than any card reader I've ever seen.
Plus they've got drivers for OSX and linux as well as Windows.

Designed by a couple of Estonian designers. And since Estonia has a
national public key infrastructure, and the citizenry have
national-issue smart cards for ID cards, I would expect the
designers actually have experience with the use cases.
