The discrimination on 64 bit CPUs prior only made sense from the perspective of secondary hardware, like video cards. There were hacks that allowed the installer to see a compatible machine and install. Understand that they worked nicely.
Very interested to hear about your experience. Mav is much more capable, has an enormous number of bug fixes contrasted to Mt lion, and is significantly more secure as a result. Having all 64 bit hardware supported (or more 64 bit) would be highly desirable. Like the Xserves that were left behind....
