Well, Apple is not a company that looks back, especially on systems they
refer to as "vintage" (one Apple Store employee said that of my wife's
white MacBook). Apple had to move to higher resolution graphics to support
Retina and 4K displays and in doing so, they increased the graphical
memory footprint higher than what can be buffered in 256MB and still
perform well.
Keep this in mind with future system purchases. While the higher end
system with discrete graphics might cost more, it'll last a heck of a lot
longer in terms of OS compatibility. I plan on replacing my current
15-inch MacBook Pro (Early 2008) with the highest end MacBook Pro that
comes out in the next release. That's six years of operating system
compatibility and suitable performance. I just hope it still has discrete
nVIDIA graphics (as the current gen does) and doesn't switch to Iris.
Blech.
