Point upgrades are dandy but for a major system release, it is best to blow the digital dusty bunnies out by 1) backing up the server boot disk (ain’t time machine grand), 2) re-initializing the boot disk, 3) installing the major upgrade, 4) restore from time machine, digital dust bunnies (or digital killed rabbits) chased off.
Or you could take the Elmer Fudd approach, install-over and then for each issue, dig through billions of obtuse log file messages trying to figure out which files got stuck because of some bogus file priv, which files need to be changed, which files replaced or subsystems need to be re-installed… Shhh. Be vewy vewy quiet, I'm hunting wabbits… (thanks but no thanks)
