You used to be able to do this, and as long as you're consistent across your installation, there's no problem.
So here's my situation: I have the home directory for ~emery and thanks to the previous setup, on all machines the UID for ~emery (mobile account) is 1050.
But when I create that user in a new Server instance, I need to tell it "this is the username for UID 1050".
