Maybe it’s because I’m a old fart, but (a) I like having all my email on my laptop (and a couple of times I’ve been able to go to my own ‘wayback email’ and yank out something from a couple years ago that resolved an argument, often along the lines of ‘here’s where I said that 3 years ago’ or ‘here’s where you said that 3 years ago’ :-) (b) I don’t trust anyone’s cloud, and what cloud would store my 90gb of email archives? (c) I don’t do email on phones or other devices without a full-size keyboard and substantial screen. (d) an intellectual preference for simpler interfaces; (e) in particular, so I don’t spend a lot of time waiting for the client and server to synch (a -real problem- with Exchange Server in years past, where it took people hours to get their email while the client & server were having a protracted ‘discussion’)
Of course it’s possible to configure an IMAP client to also download and store email locally.
