I would not be so sure that the problem is your token. I frequently get this error when attempting to send signed emails with CAC and Apple Mail (using the CACkey tokend). I see the blue checkmark to indicate the email would be signed, but then get an error when I try to send. The fix I’ve found is to uncheck the signature option, close the email; saving it in my drafts folder, then close and reopen Mail, open the draft, wait for the buttons for the sign/encrypt options to reappear, click the sign option so it turns blue again, then send and it usually works. Was a frequent occurrence with Yosemite; haven’t spent much time with El Capitan yet to see if it’s still an issue.
