- Thread-topic: [Fed-Talk] Advice on Migrating XSan
My recollection when upgrading my MetaData controllers a few years ago was that we attached the new server as a client, promoted it to a backup MDC, promoted it again to the primary MDC, added another server as a client and then promoted it to another backup MDC. Then I removed both of the old MDCs.
Not sure how this plays out with different versions of OS X and Xsan installed. You may need to rebuild the Mac mini with the old OS and Xsan version (Since the controllers technically need to be at an equal of later version of both OS and Xsan than all clients).
Once everything is equal add the mini as a client then promote it to MDC, add another server as well (since you really should have a backup MDC). Once that is all running and the Meta data has been cached etc, remove the old server(s), and then upgrade the new MDCs to 10.10 and Xsan 4. Once the servers are updated you can update your clients.
It’s been a few years since I’ve managed an Xsan, but hopefully I have remembered correctly.
I would post this to the Xsan list (if there is anyone still posting there)
