Does this mean that a program that uses IOBluetoothDeviceInquiry will only run on 10.4? Also, is there a C API available for this class, or only the ObjC API? Yes... take a look at the functions staring with "IOBluetoothDeviceInquiry" in IOBluetoothUserLib.h (that's where the C API resides). It looks like I spoke a little prematurely. Due to an oversight on our part, the C version of the inquiry API was not included in the 10.4 release. It will be included in the next major software update (10.4.3). Sorry about the confusion. So it is possible that data does not go over the air (and you do not get a notification for it). This is really an unlikely event, but if you think it can happen starting a NSTimer may be worth doing. If you issue an RFCOMM write call, the data will be delivered unless the connection is terminated. Unless there are horrible radio conditions, it seems unlikely to take very long before the write completes and you callback is called. Are you having specific problems with writes taking too long to complete? In answer to your question, your best bet is probably to create an NSTimer with the timeout that you want. Then in your callback, yoou can invalidate the timer if it hasn't fired. With that model, there is no need to block your main thread. Either the timer will fire, or you will get your write callback called. Thanks. I'm still deciding exactly how to arrange my code. Another option is to look into using the Bluetooth device class information to identify the device, but that isn't really unique any may not apply very well in your situation. That assumes you have control over the device and how it identifies itself. (2) Is there a way to get to a lower level public Bluetooth api? I've looked through some of the top level IOKit headers w/ no luck. I think if I could get an answer to this question, my following question might be moot. All of the public Bluetooth APIs are in Bluetooth.framework and BluetoothUI.framework. (3) How do I enumerate devices without the UI in absence of IOBluetoothDeviceInquiry? The device would remember the host that it is tied to (possibly paired to). Then it would refuse connections from any other devices. Another approach would be to just record the device ID ([device getAddressString ]), and maintain the customer/device association somewhare in your app. But since you are working on your own device, that does not make such a difference.
