Is it 1-31 or 0 to 7968 or something else? In other words, is it an unsigned 5-bit int or unsigned 13-bit int, or something else? I used functions listed in IOBluetoothUserLib.h which seem to work well. I would really like to avoid integrating Objective-C into this C code base. Is there a way to create and release an autorelease pool without directly using Cocoa? Bluetooth Error Detection and Handling Strategy

This is my first ever work with wireless devices, and I cannot immediately find much literature to answer such a question. For instance, how should I detect when the connection to a device has unexpectedly disconnected? Would it make sense to poll a device's - isConnected: and a channel's -isOpen: methods before performing any operation, and possibly also poll from a timer just so I can keep abreast of any changes? I guess this question could be further broken down into: how effective are these methods, and how efficient are they -- will they accurately tell me of any state changes and are they timely? When a broadband connection disappears, does IOBluetooth know about it immediately? And/or do I rely on the delegate methods -- say of IOBluetoothRFCOMMChannel -- for instance will -rfcommChannelClosed: be invoked when a device disappears? My device collects data, and the client app will write configuration commands to it, and then kind of lazily poll it's buffers for available incoming data -- basically our collection needs to be near real time and the collection rate is variable, so to implement some kind of handshake would tax our hardware. This strategy gets mucked up when the connection unexpectedly closes. I've also observed the following behavior: sometimes on open channel async or write async, I will never get the completion callback -- I gather the device is in some kind of bad state (turned off or out of range etc) at the time, but there's no way to report this to my client. I've implemented timeouts on all my operations, but I've then just sat around and waited for the completion for 10 minutes with no luck! So maybe my next question (or is it a feature request?) would be along the lines of: having gotten a timeout but no completion, is there a way I can programmatically cancel an open or write? (Or any other async operation). I currently just close the channel and close the connection and just pray that the completions don't arrive afterwards. I was testing our software (Missing Sync for Palm OS) on a new 17" Intel based iMac and found that it didn't connect all the time and when it did, timeouts were rampant. I then tried doing an OBEX transfer and saw the same type of behavior (eliminating our software). I remembered that I got the model with the Bluetooth keyboard and mouse; I shut both of those off and all my problems went away. Should the iMac be able to handle 3 simultaneous connections? I haven't installed the developer tools on the machine, yet, but will in order to do Bluetooth packet logging. I'll try to be more clear. If I create a serial port using the Bluetooth Settings Panel under the "Sharing" tab. Then if I disable the port such that the settings panel reports "Bluetooth Serial Port Off" and the checkbox in the "On" column is unchecked. If I discover the available services on my Mac with an external device (such as a mobile phone), the Serial Ports that are "Off" are still reported in the discovery and I can connect to them with my external device such that the bluetooth status (in the menu bar) shows a connection. This is causing problems for me because I don't want these Serial Ports to be visible in a particular scenario. We see that when Bluetooth is enabled on the iMac (G5), and set to discoverable, and we have another master BT device trying to find devices to connect to (Serialio.com BlueSnap product supports such a mode) that the iMac will wake up from sleep when the other BT device attempts to connect. I get the following error: "The service cannot be modified. You are attempting to remove a port which is in use. Quit the application using this port and try again." However, this happens even after a fresh boot with a fresh user (no login items). How do I check which process is using a particular serial port. Is there an alternative way to remove a port? First consider, what you *really* want rather than thinking about a "possible" solution - which is not in your case. For example, you have a special Bluetooth enabled vehicle and you want to transfer contacts to it. You have to learn, which Bluetooth profiles this device uses. Either by pairing with it or better by looking up its Bluetooth qualification. There a *half a dozen* of different "contact exchange" techniques out there in Bluetooth enabled vehicles. Basically I want to write a small program to make a Mac (Laptop) look like a Bluetooth enabled cell phone. This will allow syncing with vehicles with Bluetooth Headset technology built-in which will then allow laptop to vehicle address book synchronization.
