User-agent: Microsoft-Entourage/11.3.3.061214 I wonder if it was smart to store byte sequences of SDP records as NSStrings only because the SDP specification calls them "strings". The problem at hand is that I need to store non-textual strings in the SDP records but apparently can't: Apple's Bluetooth libs require me to pass the data in NSString containers, but those are for text, and need a encoding, which is basically nonsense, it appears to me. I am trying to store a sequence of bytes into an NSString, but when I try to store it as a UTF8 string, the [NSString initFromData] call does come back with nil - apparently it does not like the data I passed as it's not valid UTF8. So what can I do? I cannot find a "binary data" encoding. And when I use some other encoding, then I might have to risk that when generating the actual SDP data that gets passed to other devices, it gets converted into a different encoding, altering my original data. I had already written quite a long article about this but then lost it all due to a bug in MS Entourage. When I tried to invoke the "feedback" page for this product, I got an empty page. Go figure... Anyways, here's what I found, in short: 1. Boolean entries should be translated into records of type "Boolean", but they instead they get stored as type "integer". 2. Even worse, I cannot seem to store non-textual bytes (e.g. byte sequences containing 0x00 etc.) as strings. This is even a bigger flaw as I cannot work around this other than doing it in code. How can I see a SDP record in its raw byte form?

User-agent: Microsoft-Entourage/11.3.3.061214 I have trouble generating a valid SDP entry for my service. I know what the final byte-wise data should look like. Is there some way I can view my generated SDP record in that format? The "Bluetooth Explorer" only shows an interpretation of it - and there I only see that it misinterprets my provided data, showing only a fragment of it. And I can't find a function in the BT libs that would get me the bytes either. I've looked at the functions around IOBluetoothAddServiceDict(), which I use to register my SDP record. I've taken the Chat Server sample project, changed the service dictionary accodingly (I hope) and ran it. Then I tried to have another BT-equipped Mac find the Mouse service. But it doesn't work. Problem is that I don't know why. There's not much of a debugging option there, it seems to me. Using the Bluetooth Explorer on the serving Mac shows me that the SDP entries should be alright for an initial detection. One of the reasons why the other Mac fails to detect the mouse service might be that the serving Mac still identifies itself as a "Computer" and not as a "Peripheral". And that it does not include the "Positioning" feature in its service class info. I've tried changing both in the Bluetooth Explorer, but that change seems to have no effect on the client Mac side - there, the Mac keeps appearing as a Computer device without the Positioning feature. But I don't even know if that matters as I do not know the rules by which the Mac searches for a Mouse or other HID devices (e.g. a Keyboard). Can someone enlighten me or suggest how I could debug this further? E.g, does the initial search for a Mouse in the Bluettoth Setup Assistant even query the SDP records, or does it only check the device class info? A trace with PacketLogger suggests to me that the SDP record is _not_ checked at that point. Does that mean I cannot provide a Mouse service at all on a Mac? Just for the record, here is what I found: While it works apparenly just fine with a Nokia phone, it does not with a Mac as the OBEX FTP server. The reason for that is that the sample does not follow the OBEX FTP specs - apparently the Apple OBEX FTP server is verifying those rules while Nokia's is not. To fix it, these changes need to be made to the sample code: 1. When connecting, a Target Header must be supplied (UUID F9EC7BC4-953C-11D2-984E-525400DC9E09) to the "optionalHeaders" parameter. 2. In the "connected" handler, the Connection ID must be extracted from the passed headers. 3. In all other calls (PUT, GET, SETPATH), the connection ID must be supplied as the first item in the headers. 4. In the Setpath call, the flags argument must be set to 2, not 0. And if you like to also be able to retrieve a dir listing, e.g. when the name field is empty, a type header "x-obex/folder-listing" needs to be passed instead of the name header.
