But how can readValueForCharacteristic determine the length of the read, and how does it handle reading from an attribute who's length may not be fixed? P.S. If there is documentation detailing the above functionality, please post a link; as honestly, until the iPhone I am now working on, I have not used an Apple device since the Apple II s we had at high school.

Hi Karel, You read/write the whole blob with CoreBluetooth. The CoreBluetooth framework will then break it down in smaller chunks for you automatically. With the TemperatureSensor example scanning, and my peripheral advertising, it takes ~9-10 seconds to discover the iPad peripheral very often (9/10 times). In comparison the HeartRate demo on OS X finds the iPad peripheral instantly, so it doesn't seem to be an iOS advertising issue. Then I tried advertising a service on the TI board, and this was found usually very quickly (~1 sec) by both the OS X and iOS centrals (HeartRate and TemperatureSensor demos), so scanning seems to be ok on iOS too. I'm not sure what to make of this: it seems l only have a problem with iOS peripheral <-> iOS central discovery. Once discovery occurs characteristic updates happen responsively.
