Authentication problems

Hi, I am building an App which creates a peripheral. I have some properties with encryption required for notify, read, write. When a central I’ve built attempts to enable notifications, read or write, initially iOS returns 0x0405 as expected as the characteristics require authentication. However, after encrypting and bonding is complete (including tapping Pair on the iOS prompt), repeating the same command still returns 0x0405. Why would iOS continue to reject the request after authentication? I can’t see anything in the Bluetooth diagnostic.
