The app has different roles, but you can easily build an app that supports both roles. The two devices are then going to try to connect to each other and one will win.

Do you mean, we can create an app which support both roles AT ONCE? Keeping that VCard app in mind: The 'real life' example would be, that 2 users just open the app and THEN they decide who sends and who receives (or, if one user presses 'Send', it's app switches to server mode and the other user's app automagically switches to client mode)?

Bluetooth Low Energy and the Core Bluetooth framework was introduced in mid 2011and supported on all Macs, iPhone and iPad since then.
