Update: Are Canon IPF printers any reliable?

Warm thanks' to everyone that responded on and off-list. I got some wonderful insights. I still have not made my mind yet but, as I am checking prices today -- I hate to acknowledge that money plays an important part of my decision --, but I see 24" Epson printers that are selling at bargain prices, way below Canon's and HP's :( See here: http://www.vistek.ca/results/ProPhotoPrinters/printers-inkjet-wide%20carr/Wi de-Carriage.aspx According to this page (those of you in the US can probably find even better deals than this), I can have a 7900 for $2600 cdn while the 4900 is selling for almost $100 cdn more? Something's fishy because similar carriage width Canon's and HP's will run me $1000 to $1500 more? Economics.... / Roger

Thanks Alexey, Yeah, the CT driver performed normally. I have never had good luck with EFI and RGB profiles. We loaded the CT driver and the CMYK profile came out quite accurate. I'm just a junkie for more gamut, but if you have to trade accuracy, then that is not an option. We will probably try re-loading the RGB driver for grins and try it again. On the XF Proofing Rip, I did not get any significant gamut expansion with the RGB driver. Randy Zaucha

Express Rip Question

Hello Randy! What kind of driver did you set up? Did you use RGB driver or CT CMYK driver or HT driver? What media did you choose in printer settings in RIP? Did you connect RGB profile to the same media? It's very important to connect profile to correct media used during printing testchart. PS: I prefer to use CT driver and to build CMYK ICC profiles. I use i1Profiler for icc profile creation and usually get perfect results, at least 2 times (usually 3 times) better than ISO 12647-7 tolerances. Express Rip Question

I profiled an Epson 4900 with an EFI eXpress Rip. After using the Rip preset "Turn Color Management off" I printed a TC918 RGB color chart and read it with my Isis using Colorport. The data was saved as CGATS and an RGB profile was generated using EFI Profiler Suite. I imported the new profile into the rip and connected it as an RGB profile. The profile was poor. Too dark overall, various hue errors above Delta E 3 and a pink cast in the 75% to 90% blacks. I was able to edit it to respectability but would like to know how to get it right the first time. The new profile is being used by the rip as later versions showed the expected changes. Any ideas what went wrong? Randy Zaucha

Sal, Your post is very misleading. You should have mentioned that you "made the switch" to Mirage because you are now working for Mirage as their US Business Development Manager. The ColorSync user forum is not the appropriate place to make your Mirage sales pitch, or to misrepresent the Overdrive RIP. I'd like to point out that Overdrive and Mirage are not interchangeable. The workflow, color management, and file processing are different. Overdrive is a true multi-user RIP server with Pantone matching. Mirage has some nice features, but it is sold as a single-user license, which is not cost-effective in a group setting. Just to be clear -- Overdrive does not use a proprietary format to print directly from the RIP server. It can also be used to print from any Adobe application, from any computer (and mobile device) on the network. This is my first post on this forum, and hopefully the last on this topic. ColorBurst Overdrive Conversion

Jim, If this is a cast that is slight and affects the highligts the most it could be a UV measurement issue. If the previous profiles were based on measurements that excluded UV, or if the measured paper was different than what you are measuring and was less bluish (e.g., contained less optical brighteners) your present results will be show a yellowish cast in comparison. Also check that you have not changed the refernce profile and rendering intent in your new workflows (Color tab: Color Management). EPLs made in 4.1 should work in 4.5, by the way. Are you sure that the old RIP wasn't 4.0?
