Update: Are Canon IPF printers any reliable?

Warm thanks' to everyone that responded on and off-list. I got some wonderful insights. I still have not made my mind yet but, as I am checking prices today -- I hate to acknowledge that money plays an important part of my decision --, but I see 24" Epson printers that are selling at bargain prices, way below Canon's and HP's :( See here: http://www.vistek.ca/results/ProPhotoPrinters/printers-inkjet-wide%20carr/Wi de-Carriage.aspx According to this page (those of you in the US can probably find even better deals than this), I can have a 7900 for $2600 cdn while the 4900 is selling for almost $100 cdn more? Something's fishy because similar carriage width Canon's and HP's will run me $1000 to $1500 more? Economics.... / Roger

Reading ambient light using an Eye-One Pro

List-members- In the past, I've used i1 Share to acquire spectral data from ambient light sources using the Eye-One Pro and it's ambient light filter. i1 Share won't run on Lion. Are there any suggestions for Lion-compatabile software that will grab spectral data from light sources? I know of Canon's Light Source Measure Tool but that will only provide degrees Kelvin (as well as illuminance). Regards, _peter

Dear all, there is currently only one tool which is able to measure the light environment and in the same time is conform with the ISO 3664. It is a spectroradiometer especially developped to do it well. Why? Actually the fact is that the EyeOne Pro only does measure at sampling interval: 3.5nm. It is to far for good results. Instead of this, these tool is able to reproduce and analyze wavelength each +/- 0.5 nm according to the ISO 3664 who needs to be < 1.0 for Mvis and < 1.5 for Muv. Thus, the EyeOne Pro displays results which appear exact but in fact are not. It is called GL optic. And if your i1Profiler automatically updated to v1.3 you won’t be able to bring in measurements from ColorPort v2.x unless you upgrade to v2.0.5. Using i1Profiler for QTR grayscale measurement and profiling

FWIW, I posted two articles last week. A short i1Pro2 review at http://www.on-sight.com/?p=2522 and, probably of more interest to this group, an article on using i1Profiler 1.3 for QTR grayscale measurement and profiling at http://www.on-sight.com/?p=2520. Measuring grayscale targets requires i1Profiler 1.3's new "Measure Reference Chart" functionality. and can be done with any i1 device (i1Pro1, i1Pro2, iSis, iO table). I think the "Measure Reference Chart" and "Measure Chart" functionality will lesson our dependency on MeasureTool and Colorport. Both are a quick read - hope it's useful. Found my problem: "proofing" was not showing up when attempting to create custom soft proof. I had to work backwards on PS CS3 to find where 'proofing" was located. All is well, for now. apparently .icc profiles are not valid

Seem the .icc profiles are not valid. Must be something I am doing in i1Profiler v1.3.1 it has changes, like using the new i1Pro 2. Guess I better read more on this, and communicate with x-rite. Is the ICC still relevant?

In the recent RMI newsletter Robin asks and defines the issues within this question <http://rmimaging.com/information/Chromaxion_Issue_4.pdf>. The only thing Robin seems to have missed was that by going through the Lab connection space, some colors are changed. This disrupts my color output more than anything. The problem has been shown with great specificity by Bruce Lindbloom at <http://www.brucelindbloom.com/index.html?MunsellCalcHelp.html#BluePurple>, from <http://www.brucelindbloom.com/index.html?UPLab.html>. I was told that this problem was going to be corrected by a "forthcoming" revision initiative (10 years and counting), which also seems to have gone away. Is it time to move-on to some more responsive system. Working from an iPad doesn't allow color management. Won't we need an app to do that? Slap to the forehead... or is that what Apple is facilitating -- the creation of a color management app for their app-selling-machine, the iPad? I happen to know that the original proposal for colorsync was equation-based, rather than LUT-based. The LUT technology was added so that manufacturers could differentiate their various product levels using "secret sauce" back in the 1990s. In the meantime, product levels seems to have gone away. All the highend profile engines of the past have been bought and eliminated, except for ArgyllCMS (which has always been grassroots, but now with a mini-GUI). Or, have I gotten that wrong? ColorMunki vs i1Pro vs i1Pro2 all seem to use the same profile engine in a different wrapper. Or, have I gotten that wrong? Tim Vitale Oakland, CA

need help securing new .icc custom profile in view>proof setup>custom

I have been successfully bringing custom printer profiles into "view". However, today, I don't know what I am doing wrong. Just cannot save the custom profile so it can be used in PS CS 5. Target printed with Adobe Color Printer Utility. Read with i1Profiler v1.3.1. Appears profile is successfully created. However, I cannot "save" the profile for use in view>proof setup. Which means, I cannot see the image file with the custom .icc profile I just created. The profile does show up in colorsync>profiles. Therefore I think it is a real valid profile. Is this an issue with PS CS5, version 12.0.4 x64? As I wrote, I used to be able to save the new profiles. Thank you for your prompt consideration and response. Sincerely, David B. Miller, Pharm.
