Hello List, If you create CMYK profiles with X-Rite i1Profiler, pay close attention. From 1.4.2, the meaning of the black start slider in Profile Settings has changed. A black start of 10 now means that from L*10 and darker, black is used, as opposed to a start from 10%, which are of course highlights. So from now on, this is the rule: - Select a Black start of 100 to get Black into tonal CMY values from 0-100% - Select a Black start of 70 to get Black into tonal CMY values from 30-100% - Select a Black start of 50 to get Black into tonal CMY values from 50-100% - Select a Black start of 30 to get Black into tonal CMY values from 70-100% - Select a Black start of 10 to get Black into tonal CMY values from 90-100% A mistake is easily made. I shall restrain myself from any sarcastic comment. Hello Lee, thanks for your swift reply. I actually converted using relative colorimetric with BPC (which gives a good visual match) but I'm interested if the colour L1, a0, b0 actually exists in any print colour space. If I look at the data set for ISOCoatedv2 the L a b value for C100, M100, Y0, K100 is 7.88, 5.79, -5.94 (the lowest L value I can find). How am I getting 1, 0, 0 on conversion? When I convert using absolute I don't get a good visual match along with a 14% tint of yellow in the white point. But I still get an L a b value which I'm sure I shouldn't be able to achieve L5, a0, b3 What gives?!? Simple L a b Question

Yeah right! I have a file, supplied in USWebCoatedSWOPv2 that, when I run a dropper over it in Photoshop, appears to have a L a b value of 1,0,0 in its darkest shadow. This shouldn't be possible should it? When I convert to ISOCoatedv2 the value stays the same, which definitely shouldn't happen should it? Could anyone explain this to me?

Thank you, Andrew. I needed that! I do use "S", soft proofing. I had not used the simulate paper and ink. Next for me, is the print module. I am not interested in all the templates. I usually print 24 x20, and other large sizes. What I am attempting is to have the print, out of the Epson Pro 9900, look nearly the same, if not the same as if I had printed the exact same image file through PS CS5. I am so used to being able to use "view", choose the substrate, and be confident the print will appear nearly as close to the original piece of art I am making a reproduction of. I am delighted this issue is posted. I have no idea how to soft proof an image in LR 4, as I do in PS CS 5. In 5, there is no issue. But, what do I do to be able to print straight out of LR with the printed image looking the same out of 5? Now I must (don't know any better) send to CS PS5 to adjust for the substrate. I am open to ideas on how to do the same exercise with LR 4. I know in LR to use "S" for soft proofing. And this ACR 7.3, how in the world do I get into PS CS5? I download something and end up with DNG. Equipment: MacBook Pro 8,3 17 inch non-glare display, OS 10.8.2, NEC PA271w, Epson Pro 9900. Profile with i1Profiler, i1Pro ver. "D" spectrophotometer. Hi, I am on a Mac Pro OS 10.6.8 and see small but unacceptable color differences between images displayed in Lightroom 4 and in Photoshop CS 5.1. The same image exported from Lightroom and displayed in Photoshops is a little bit more saturated, grey gets a bluish touch, green is more intensive, and so on. I am using ProPhoto RGB as working space for Photoshop and export files as tiff from Lightroom in ProPhoto RGB. My Cinema Display is color managed with i1 Profier (Bradford ICC Version 2). Any help would be greatly appreciated Peter Baumbach

Thanks to those who pointed out the X-rite plug-in for Photoshop to create 7 color seps. The ease of use and the gamut expansion for this type of printing is terrific. As a long time color separation guy, I really like this method of reproducing clor on a press. Randy Zaucha Managed Color

Update: Are Canon IPF printers any reliable?

Warm thanks' to everyone that responded on and off-list. I got some wonderful insights. I still have not made my mind yet but, as I am checking prices today -- I hate to acknowledge that money plays an important part of my decision --, but I see 24" Epson printers that are selling at bargain prices, way below Canon's and HP's :( See here: http://www.vistek.ca/results/ProPhotoPrinters/printers-inkjet-wide%20carr/Wi de-Carriage.aspx According to this page (those of you in the US can probably find even better deals than this), I can have a 7900 for $2600 cdn while the 4900 is selling for almost $100 cdn more? Something's fishy because similar carriage width Canon's and HP's will run me $1000 to $1500 more? Economics.... / Roger
