I was just now chiding someone for the gratuitous use of apostrophes only to discover this in my own writing below. How does this happen? Have a look at Jon Cone's color pigment inks, ConeColor. He makes replacement inks for the Ultrachrome K3 ink set. This I think is what you are looking for. They are encapsulated like Epson inks and can replace a color position without need of doing a flush. I am unfamiliar with the other brand you mentioned. I shoudn't think that you'd need a RIP just because you changed the ink set, but if the colorant's are different of course you won't be able to use your old profiles. This is rather the point of an ouput proifile, after all. Be leery of inks that are "a fraction of the cost," as quality pigments (e.g., from Ciba Geigy) are very costly, and there is a limit to how cheap the inks can be. For top-quality replacement inks you should expect to pay at least half the price of the OEM inks. You may not realize your error until some months or years later, when the prints fade or discolor. Can someone share experience using those inks? I am tempted to switch from the original Epson Ultrachrome K3 on the Epson 4800 to the Ultramax inks, available at a fraction of the cost. They advertise a wider gamut that brings more vivid colors. Hi Dennis, this issue might nothing to do with the NEC display, it's just a plain workflow problem. Web site builders often ask the designers to save images without embedded profiles, to make the images even smaller. If your friend saved the sRGB images without embedding a color profile, it's up to the actual browser to display the images in whatever colour space. As far as I know, most of the browsers don't do anything with profileless images, they just put them through directly into the display's colour space. If you look at those images on an older (sRGB gamut) display, there will be no great problems - but if you happen to take a look at them on a wide gamut screen, you will see excessive saturation problems you described. To solve this issue, you can re-save the images with embedded profiles (making them some kilobytes larger), and check them in a browser (just drag & drop them into a empty browser window). You have to see the same color both in Photoshop and the browser, on every display. I hope this helps a bit. Kind regards, Peter

NEC Display issues

Yesterday I got a call from a photographer who's having trouble with a new NEC 24" display and I'm hoping the folks on this list can shed some light on the situation for us. The photographer calibrated the display using the Adobe RGB setting in the Spectra View software, but began noticing that images on the web started to look overly saturated in the Reds, pretty much as if someone had assigned Adobe RGB to an sRGB image. This, of course, had her worrying about whether she has been over compensating for a color shift or somehow had been pushing the Reds too much in her images. NEC's suggestion was just to calibrate the display using the sRGB setting, but that defeats the purpose of having a wider gamut display, doesn't it? For what it's worth I have a Dell display in my studio that has a pretty wide gamut too, (comparable to Adobe RGB), and I've never seen this when viewing images on the web. So I'm feeling a little skeptical that it's just a case of using a wide gamut display to view images on the web. Any suggestions as to what could be the cause of the problem? And even more importantly what the solution might be? Thanks! Hi, everyone. I am trying to find the source for the reference below and would appreciate any help you can provide. This is the reference found in a book: “ A full-spectrum light source, as recommended, is one with a color temperature close to 5500 K (D55) that is spectrally balanced throughout the visible spectrum. This light source is defined as equivalent to daylight in Washington D.C. (Bureau of Standards) in the month of June, during the hours or 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm, when there is a slightly overcast sky; the CRI of this light source should be 90 or higher.” Does anyone know the source for this reference ? Also, does anyone know of a chart and/or table with the spectral power distribution of daylight throughout the visible spectrum ? Is there a reference website for this or perhaps a book ? Color appearance model, color space and color gamut.

Hello, everyone. I have a few questions about color technology as I am a new to this topic. 1. What is the difference between a color appearance model and a color space ? For instance, which of this two is Lab ? What about RGB ? What about CMYK ? What about the Munsell system ? 2. Is there software (preferably for the Mac) I can use to plot the color space covered by a color guide ? I wish to compare two color guides by plotting each specimen from these color guides onto a chart to evaluate the gamut or color space covered by each (each of the color guides, that is). What is the best software and best way to this ? Thank you in advance for your help. Joseph. PS: Any recommendations for book titles covering these topics will be very appreciated.
