I'm sorry if this is out of bounds, but I'm not sure who else to ask. I need to sell my i1 publish kit so I can pay spring tuition. I bought it just before i1 profiler came out (january 2011?), so it unlocks the legacy apps as well as the current apps. When I list this, does that fact that it runs legacy apps make it any more valuable than the current i1pro (used), or does the new i1pro also run the legacy apps? I just want to make sure I get as much as I can for it. Boy will my feelings will be hurt of an eBayer laughs at me for asking too much. Please reply to me directly. I don't want to waste bandwidth on an off-topic question. Thanks/sorry, jesse

calibrating a MacBook Pro (retina display)

I find myself needing to calibrate a new MacBook Pro (retina display). The color balance is definitely off. The best instrument available to me is an i1 Pro (rev. A). What reasonably-priced software package would you recommend for monitor calibration? ("Reasonable" meaning around $100, if possible???) For calibration purposes, do I need to worry (or think about) the fact that this laptop can automatically choose one of two graphics paths -- either using the Intel Iris Pro or the NVIDIA GeForce? (As background: I also have a collection of dusty colorimeter pucks, along with various software that will not run on Mavericks due to the earlier demise of Rosetta -- which partly explains why I've been on Snow Leopard till now...) Regardless of the MacBook Pros display limitations (compared to a high end monitor) I prefer to calibrate MBP than rely on the inaccurate (blue bias) native screen colour straight off the production line. In the field, when images have to be wired, colour is important to me - experience leads me to ignore possible monitor artefacts caused by forcing the monitor away from its native state. At sports events, media centres are often poorly lit. With the addition of a large monitor screen hood (majority of colleagues use them) with its small viewing aperture cutting out the majority of the weak ambient light I feel far more comfortable adjusting images with a Mac Book pro calibrated, than not. Refinement of the RAW files for final Tiff archival library purposes will be completed back in the office on a high end monitor. Problem in the LightRoom to Camera RAW workflow - was: Image batch checker?

It seems that my late JPG productions suffer some flaw, since they are rejected by an automated photo book publishing program. I am now thinking that maybe this is due to some error or bug in my programs. In my normal workflow I use LightRoom 5 and export the RAW files to Photoshop CS6 to apply some edits, then save them as TIFF 16 bit and they are automatically reimported in LR. When I need the photos, I export the TIFFs as JPG sRGB. Recently, I have seen inconsistencies in the export RAW to PS process. Some edits made in LR are randomly dropped in the process. Interestingly, if I export those same RAW to DxO Viewpoint for instance, they always match perfectly. This makes me think that the culprit is not within LR, which uses its own engine to send to DxO, but rather in Camera RAW, which to my understanding is used to open the RAWs sent from LR to PS. I have brought this to the Adobe discussion forum, but got no answer. I wished there was a way to force LR to use its own engine to process the files until the problem is fixed, but is there a way? The choice is offred only when the installed version of Camera RAW is outdated. Is this a known bug, or more probably a problem due to file corruption? Before reinstalling Camera RAW, is there an uninstaller for that app? Best regards Paul Schilliger

Hi Having had to work with the wide range of very 'white' uncoated papers on the market, Fogras choice of 93 2 -10 seems a reasonable choice based on what I have measured. I guess though there will still be a need to edit and/or create profiles for some of the very 'unusually' uncoated papers in the market. GRACoL 2013

Hello All: I hope I can explain myself clearly. We are using an Indigo as a "proofer". We proof simulating various printing conditions. With the Indigo we are able print on the actual stock the printer will use (most of the stock is being supplied by the printers themselves). We use ORIS Color Tuner to maintain colour and Hot folders to process files. Our workflow is as follows. We get the Indigo into a repeatable state. We run an IT8 through ORIS (various iterations) until we have a colorimetric match to the printing condition (Ex. GRACoL 2006). We use paper stocks that fall within spec. for GRACoL. As long as the printer is using stocks that also fall within the GRACoL spec. we have a "match" between our proof and the printer. All this is fine until we come to uncoated stocks with high levels of OBA's. Before the release of the GRACoL Uncoated 2013 profile we would set up on an uncoated stock that was within the spec. for Fogra 47. We would measure the IT8 with an ISis using the UV Cut measurement. If we were proofing on printer supplied paper with higher levels of OBA's than the spec. allowed, we simply let the colour go where it went. This works quite well until we run into the situation where the printer (making their own proofs) would use a UV cut measurement on stocks very heavy in OBA's. Now the two proofs will not match. What is the best way to set up in this scenario? Should I use the UV Cut or not on papers with high levels of OBA. Remember - I am not simulating on an Inkjet, I am using the actual printing papers on an Indigo. Is there a correct way as a rule of thumb? Thanks - Mike Stewart
