Target printing from i1 Profiler

Hello I tried to print an i1 IO Pro2 target from the X-Rite software to an Epson 4900 with the latest drivers's version. I had a very dull print so I tried with the Adobe Color Printer Utility and I had the same result. I noticed that in the driver dialog box in the Color Matching panel there was a default on ColorSync but there's no choice to select Epson Color Controls. So I printed the target from Photoshop and I selected Printer Manages Colors and in the driver dialog box, in the Color Matching panel, I was able to select Epson Color Controls and then, in the Print Settings I was able to turn Color Settings to OFF (No color management). In this way I had a good colorful print and I made a profile that's working fine but…what's changed? I mean, I knew that with Photoshop there was no choice of printing with no color management under Mountain Lion and I used the Adobe Color Printer Utility. But even with the i1 Profiler software I was able to print a right target; today it seems that it's not possible anymore and I should go back to the old way of printing from Photoshop. Anyone noticed that or am I missing something? Giuseppe Andretta

Roger You should check the firmware version in your PA series display, as an update has been released that, amongst other things, improves the granularity of the 6-axis color controls. The update is available here for both Mac and Windows: http://www.nec-display.com/dl/en/dp_soft/pa_fm_update/index.html The latest versions are 1.01.04 for the PA271W and PA301W, and 1.01.09 for the PA231W, PA241W and P241W. NEC MultiProfiler

The latest version of NEC MultiProfiler, v1.1.0, under the Edit... button, offers what's called a new "6 Axis Color trim" function. It may not be all that new for some of you but it is for me. The design of this new function seems like a winner but it seems overly *sensitive*? If you have seen the interface then you know what I'm talking about but for those who haven't, here's what happens... On the "Hue" control, for instance, are horizontal sliders for the RGBCMY colors. Fair enough. I suspect these must be implementing some kind of hardware linear adjustments in the monitor LUTs? Each slider is implemented with a plus or minus "63" numeric range. The default value is 0, of course. The number 63 suggests to me that, perhaps, the control is implemented with 6 bits registers? 2 to the 6 power gives 64, after all. It may be what it is? If that's the case then the fix could be a matter of implementing "more bits" or distributing the available bits differently to make things smoother? It's a fantastic step in the right direction, in my opinion but the lack of bits seems like a hindrance... To give you an idea of the current implementation's sensitivity, a mere -1 Red move, for instance, results in an overly huge color move. Something like a 10 delta E, if I was to put in on a perceptual scale. It's in the right direction all right but it needs more precision, in my view. For the job at hand, maybe a -0.3 or -0.4 move would be more than adequate, you see? Some of you may rightfully suggest a White Point move instead. Yeah. I got that. Thank you. In my early experience we used 3M Color Keys and Custom Color Keys. They were exposed and then developed using water - people often referred to them as wet proofs. Once they were dry each color was registered in layers, one on top of the other. I doubt if this is what's being referred to in this case. Henry

Hi Mike Wet proofs, that's a term we don't hear much these days! Could refer to a very short press run on a production (or similar) press, or most likely a special "flat-bed" press, made by Mailander or Dainippon. etc. These are based on a long sturdy "bed", on which is the plate and the paper. The "Offset" cylinder and the inking system are in a carriage, which runs along the bed on a geared track, transferring the image from the plate to the paper. The paper is loaded manually. At one time most large prepress companies had at least one, until they were replaced by Cromalins, and later by digital systems. They had a reputation for printing "sharp", i.e. with low dot-gain. The plates should have a normal (FOGRA, etc.) control wedge. They are useful if printing on special paper or card, as this should be the production stock, or special inks. So useful for packaging etc., but to match Fogra 47? The Copra device links can be used within Prinergy/EVO/ColorFlow. Along with "Harmony" corrections, you will achieve great results in terms of quality and ink savings. I should note that Copra also creates RGB to CMYK Device links that are more accurate than competitive RGB to CMYK transforms. Moving on, you can take things further with MultiChannel Device linking and a very effective Device LInk editing feature. I for one would be interested to hear how you get on with the solution. Wet Proofs

Hello All: I am asking for info on "Wet Proofs". I know that in Asia they are produced on hand presses using plates (not the same plates that will be run on press) and use standard inks and the actual paper your job will be run on. How accurate are these proofs to a specific print specification (Ex: Fogra 47)? Is there an easy way to tell a Wet Proof from a press sheet? I'm guessing that if the stock adheres to the print specification then there is a chance that the Wet Proof could as well. I suppose we could ask for an IT8 or control strip to read and analyse from the Wet proof. How are Wet Proofs actually made? The definition of a Wet Proof changes depending on the article you read. i1Profiler and Digital Camera Profiling

ColorChecker Passport does a decent job with custom camera profiles for every day use. I prefer Adobe's free DNG Profile Editor, at least for studio portraiture. Xrite profiles are contrastier, more saturated and a little too reddish for my taste, at least for portraits. Colorchecker passport is much easier to use, and it is a free utility you can download from Xrite. But, it has no ability to tailor your results. Adobe DNG Profile Editor takes more work, and little more experimenting, but is incredibly flexible. I find it provides a "softer" starting point and makes edits a lot easier and faster in LR or PS. You select a base profile as your starting point (I prefer Camera Neutral for portrait work) and you can edit it as desired, for more or less contrast, saturation, color adjustment, etc. Both of these are designed to work with Adobe Camera Raw (Bridge, PS, or LR) and they are not ICC profiles, but recipes that the ACR program uses during raw display and conversion. You can create profiles for a specific use (a studio setup, specific lighting, etc), or as Scott mentioned, "dual illuminant" profiles that cover a wide range of lighting conditions and interpolate between Daylight (6500K) and an Incandescent (2800K). Either of these programs gives me better color from my digital cameras than the generic camera profiles suppled by Adobe. I use the DNG PE profiles for studio portraiture and softer images. CMYK profiles

Hello all I really don't know if this is the proper forum and if not someone please guide me. My problem is getting one of my photos to a newspaper to act as an advertisement. The paper stated that they wanted the photo & text in CMYK 16 bit 300DPI. I dutifully did what they asked. However when I looked at the result in the newspaper I was really disappointed. The logo text was blurred and unreadable and the colour sucked and the image was too dark. The proof that I sent was spot on. The newspaper told me that it was normal for the colors to not match exactly and to be too dark. As for the blurry text, I was told it was because of the text going thru the "plates". So my question is what settings do I use to ensure as close a copy as to my original proof?
