Seeking advice prior to upgrading camera and scanner calibration tools (HCT)

Hi, Once again left with tools that are incompatible with newer Mac and OS… Amongst others, BasiCColor Scan PPC is not supported by OS 10.8. The good surprise though, is that the calibration package I have just purchased to calibrate my monitors seems to offer a free scanner and camera profiling option ! (but is it really operational at no additional cost, I mean without having a measuring tool other than the monitor puck plugged in?). However, my Hutchcolor HCT target (on Fuji Velvia) is unfortunately not supported by X-Rite i1Profiler. So, as far as I can see, I'm left with those two options: — Purchase a new IT8 target for the X-Rite software (no idea of the cost). — Upgrade BasiCColor Scan (already an upgrade from Profile City ICC Scan) to BasiCColor Input (no idea of the cost either). I came to like the target produced by Don Hutcheson. It is sort of wide gamut and extended range, compared to standard Kodak IT8 targets. Whether that alone makes better profiles, I assume it does, especially since I shot mainly Fuji Velvia in a former life, but I don't really know. My target is now maybe 10 years old though (and so are my slides), but it was used no more than 4 or 5 times and stored in a dark cool place. BasiCColor still lists the HCT target. Their older software made good profiles for the Eversmart scanner. I now wish to calibrate my Canon 1Ds III as well (with the included Hutcheson Crystal archive print I guess, also 10 years old). In the other hand, X-Rite software is certainly more convenient to use (unlike BasiCColor: one does it all and no need to register a machine specific TAN number that gets lost with every hardware upgrade or system renewal, though the BasiCColor team has always been helpful I must say). X-Rite i1 DisplayPro is the best Monitor profiler I have used so far, and allowed me to obtain a pretty good match of MBPr, NEC PA271 wide gamut and Lacie 321 standard gamut, all with specific backlighting options. Whether it would make as good or better camera profiles, I have no idea. Have you? Thanks in advance for your advice! Best regards Paul Schilliger

Before digitalizing client's original art, the camera/lens/sensor/lighting has been profiled. The NEC PA271w has been profiled. I do the exercise with gray card for both exposure and white balance. Image files look fine on the NEC PA271w display. Therefore when opening dng image files in PS CS5's RAW, the display looks very much like the original art on the NEC PA271w!. I just don't know how to open an image file in RPP64 and successfully have a good image on the NEC PA271w. Oh, the Epson Pro 9900 is also custom profiled. But my real trouble and concern is how to use RPP 64 as simply as with PS CS5 raw. All suggestions are invited. Needed! ! ! David B Miller, Pharm. I have seen some changes but don't recall which pages. I use this book for a college course, 2nd edition. At one point one of the students had purchased the first edition by mistake. I can't really say if the changes were significant or not. It did throw off that student when I was referencing certain pages during a lecture one week of class. Hi, Everyone. I would like to either read a book or attend a course (short, half to one full day in duration) as a primer on color technology. The subjects I would like to learn more about are different color models and color spaces, different gamut between devices (monitors x printers), calibration of computer monitors for proper color reproduction and how it is performed including the use of LUT (look up tables), lighting for proper viewing and color evaluation, and others. Is there a book on color technology that would cover all these topics for those like with only basic knowledge of color technology and digital devices? In case there isn't are there any courses any of you could recommend that would address these topics? Thank you in advance, Joseph.

Several brands black inks for Dmax tests on 500+ papers

That is the project I'm going to undertake. The Dmax data will be added to the SpectrumViz information. I bought 2 secondhand Epson desktop models; R220 and an R300. Both 6 channel models, 3 picoliter minimum droplet size and QTR supported. Cleaning the printers right now, if there are issues I will buy another one, they are dirt cheap. Two sets of refillable carts ACR are ordered. Each channel could get a different black ink, one printer with MK, the other with PK. I might go for two channels sharing the same ink to even out differences between ink channels. In that case I have only 3 brands I can test. For efficiency I have to print the 3 or 6 greyscale wedges, MK or PK, in one run. It will still take a year before I have all the data. The method for printing and measuring will be described on my site. I will at least test: Canon Lucia pigment MK and PK in the latest version: iPF8300, 9400. HP Vivera pigment MK and PK: Z3100, Z3200. Epson Ultrachrome K3 pigment MK PK: 11880 or a more recent model: see below. The HP inks I have, the Canon inks I probably can get fast enough, the Epson will take longer. There is no chance I will order carts like that due to costs but I expect a friend can provide me with some near empty wide format carts of the Canon, Epson (the last may take some time). Which brings me to the request to send me similar near empty carts which are not beyond their expiry date. It could help to start this project faster. The same for Eboni ink and MIS PK black in that category. If there are enough requests to add more brands pigment inks and I receive the inks I can go up to 6 brands. OCP might be a candidate for Europe, Piezography for the US. Monitor Calibration Software

We had been using ProfileMaker Pro for monitor calibration throughout our institution (with the exception of ColorNavigator for the Eizo monitors), but when we finally get OS 10.8 installed on our Macs we can no longer use that. I am looking for a cross-platform solution to calibrate monitors throughout our institution. We use the I1Pro. What are the recommendations for calibration software with an option for a site license? I'm aware of basICColor, i1Profiler, ColorEyes Display Pro, ColorMunki as possible options (though I don't know about the site license options). Are there other software solutions that you would recommend? What are the advantages/disadvantages of each? Thanks. Ken Fleisher

ColorChecker Digital SG question

Hello, Does anyone know the reason for the multiple white, gray and black patches around the perimeter of the SG target? Are they necessary for successful profiling or are they redundant? Does profiling software make use of them to equalize color or illumination across the field perhaps? Thank you, Alex Jamison
