Seeking advice prior to upgrading camera and scanner calibration tools (HCT)

Hi, Once again left with tools that are incompatible with newer Mac and OS… Amongst others, BasiCColor Scan PPC is not supported by OS 10.8. The good surprise though, is that the calibration package I have just purchased to calibrate my monitors seems to offer a free scanner and camera profiling option ! (but is it really operational at no additional cost, I mean without having a measuring tool other than the monitor puck plugged in?). However, my Hutchcolor HCT target (on Fuji Velvia) is unfortunately not supported by X-Rite i1Profiler. So, as far as I can see, I'm left with those two options: — Purchase a new IT8 target for the X-Rite software (no idea of the cost). — Upgrade BasiCColor Scan (already an upgrade from Profile City ICC Scan) to BasiCColor Input (no idea of the cost either). I came to like the target produced by Don Hutcheson. It is sort of wide gamut and extended range, compared to standard Kodak IT8 targets. Whether that alone makes better profiles, I assume it does, especially since I shot mainly Fuji Velvia in a former life, but I don't really know. My target is now maybe 10 years old though (and so are my slides), but it was used no more than 4 or 5 times and stored in a dark cool place. BasiCColor still lists the HCT target. Their older software made good profiles for the Eversmart scanner. I now wish to calibrate my Canon 1Ds III as well (with the included Hutcheson Crystal archive print I guess, also 10 years old). In the other hand, X-Rite software is certainly more convenient to use (unlike BasiCColor: one does it all and no need to register a machine specific TAN number that gets lost with every hardware upgrade or system renewal, though the BasiCColor team has always been helpful I must say). X-Rite i1 DisplayPro is the best Monitor profiler I have used so far, and allowed me to obtain a pretty good match of MBPr, NEC PA271 wide gamut and Lacie 321 standard gamut, all with specific backlighting options. Whether it would make as good or better camera profiles, I have no idea. Have you? Thanks in advance for your advice! Best regards Paul Schilliger

Do SoLux bulbs meet color temp specs?

Some people say that SoLux bulbs fail to meet their CCT spec by up to 1000K and some say they meet specs. If you have test results one way or the other, I'd like to hear from you, because I'd like to set the record straight. I have no connection to SoLux, other than using their bulbs in my digital darkroom and being satisfied with their performance. My own measurements and information supplied by SoLux and the Intertek test lab indicate that SoLux bulbs meet their color temp spec within +/- 200K. SoLux maintains that in all cases where they got an opportunity to review the test set up when out of spec results were reported, they showed incorrect test setups related to light contamination from the backs of the bulbs or otherwise and/or incorrectly powering the bulbs. After corrections were made the bulbs tested within spec. If your tested out of spec, did you work with Phillip Bradfield or Kevin McGuire at SoLux to resolve the issue and what was the result? Colorimetric Accuracy in the Field

I've been following this discussion and though it is geek-intriguing, in which I include myself. And I'm still catching up. But it seems completely irrelevant to being a working photographer in the field. If I stand on a beach at magic hour in golden light, is the goal a capture of the subject in a perfect colorimetric rendering of that moment's unique and beautiful light, which is what I take to be the end result of some in the "pro-colorimetric" side of this debate? Certainly not a capture of the subject that ignores the momentary unique lighting and says, this is what it would have looked like under some sort of "standard" light; there would be no point to doing that except for some scientific goal with clearly stated conditions of measurement accuracy and toolset accuracy. I think I'm interested in reproducing my perception of what I see, which is the object or scene in that unique lighting, and hopefully a little extra personal poetry of imagination. Anything requiring "matching" must state all the objectively-measured conditions and definitions of what is a match. That masterful matching print of the painting or museum piece will definitely include the specification for the conditions of viewing, including lighting levels, lighting color temperature, evenness, etc. to stay within the accepted deviation constituting a "match." There is no such thing as the original and copy matching to some fine, objective numeric standard across all mediums and viewing conditions. I did give a passing thought to getting the Epson V750Pro--I have an Epson 2450 but I've never used it to scan slides/negs since I had the Minolta--which I've heard good things about but when I found the OpticFilm 7200 at such a good price (it didn't have a power cord but I was able to find the appropriate one online for $8), I've just kept my Epson 2450. Hi Everyone, I'd like to piggy-back on Frederick's questions with a question about slide scanners. My Nikon CoolScan 4000 died and I need to replace it. (FYI : Nikon is no longer repairing them.) The PlusTek scanner was recommended. Since there are no local dealers I would have to buy it sight unseen and untested. Does anyone have experience with PlusTek? Other recommendations for a dedicated slide scanner? With that said, can a scanner that does both transparency and reflective deliver the same quality as a dedicated slide scanner?
