Assigning Pantone Colors to Heat Treated Metallic Objects

I need some advice on how to approach a project. I received a color management assignment from an engineering company. They heat treat metal and are in the process of preparing some polished steel discs (semi-matte, not a mirror finish), then heat treated. As the heat treating temperature changes, so does the final color of the heat treated sample, apparently quite reliably. They want me to determine the Pantone color that comes closest to each heat treatment temperature. Their final goal is to hand out printed samples that reliably reflect the temperature at which a sample was heat treated. Sounds simple. My first challenge will be getting reliable L*a*b* readings for a decent match. Just to experiment, I tried sampling the matte aluminum surface on the back of my iPhone directly using my i1Pro spectrophotometer, and got a Lab reading of 77L, -1.1a, 1.5b using D50/2° (5 different samples were all very close). Using the color picker in Photoshop (whole Lab numbers only), it says that Pantone Cool Gray 4C (Pantone Solid Coated Library) is the closest match. If I use the Pantone Premium Metallics Library, it gives me 10103C. They want me to print a few dozen accurate color charts on my Epson printer and semigloss paper, so I will have to use the Pantone Solid Coated Library. I'll probably create the file in Lab color space using the equivalent Lab numbers for each Pantone color. Here's my problem… When I hold the printed Cool Gray 4C from my Pantone swatch book against my iPhone, the Pantone sample looks a lot darker than my iPhone. Of course, if I tilt the iPhone so it receives less direct light, it gets darker and approximates my 4C sample. I'm confident the Lab values are correct. The a* and b* color data is probably quite usable, but I suspect getting a suitable brightness level that prints so it looks like the sample is going to be difficult. It's like photographing any shiny metallic object (like silverware)…I can make the object appear pure white, pure black or any shade of gray I want, depending on my lighting and the family of angles. Hmmmm. If reading directly with a spectrophotometer doesn't work well, I guess I can photograph the samples under controlled lighting, but I am faced with the same dilemma, because I can make the metal as bright or as dark as I wish depending on the lighting setup. Does anybody have experience and advice on how to proceed? Thanks, Lou Dina

High frequency ballasts for Just Normlicht Proof Top Multi 5000

I want to replace the ballasts in an old Just Normlicht Proof Top Multi 5000. The original ballasts supplied with this unit are 50Hz and it's impossible to get descent iPhone snapshots for clients without ugly banding :-( Before ordering a couple of new ballasts I thought I’d ask if anybody else had made this modification and managed to find ballasts of a similar size so that I don’t have to drill new mount points? Profile creation and editing software

Hello all - I am currently employing a digital copy stand with a Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III that is actually quite effective. I need to move the setup to a new location, and will be changing out some of the lighting equipment, so I will need to start over with a new input profile. I have basICColor input 3.1.2 to create the input profile from the X-Rite colorchecker Digital SG card, but I am now looking for some decent profile editing software to fine tune my input profile. The last software that I had used was Profile Maker Pro 5.0.10, but that is no longer compatible with Mac 10.8. Any suggestions for a profiling software package that would allow editing of a profile that won't break the bank? I wouldn't mind a package that would allow for the creation of an output profile as well, but for now, editing is my main goal. Many thanks.

There is nothing really good in OS 10.7 and above. I run Snow Leopard Server in Parallels, which allows me to use i1P. I also use Logo Colorlab with Photoshop for tricky stuff that I used to be able to do in Custom Color ICC, mentioned above. The larger question usually is, what attribute of your camera profile are you trying to edit? If you are using Mac, RPP 64, Raw Processor 64, includes camera/lens/sensor/lighting profile. For me, personally, saves time/money and works! ! ! Capture opens in RPP 64, profile used for this particular session is used, set to Kodachrome 64, and then open it LR 4. I use the 24 patch target, alone as well as with the original art, in capture. Profiling software is included in RPP 64. Does take some learning to use RPP 64, and once learned, well, I won’t let it go. Creators of RPP 64 help get going. No need to be scared. Questions on some basic definitions and concepts.

Hi again, everyone. I have done quite a bit of research but haven't found the answer to two questions. Any help or guidance you can provide will be very appreciated. Here they are: 1. A textbook with a chapter on color theory (the book itself is not about color technology) has a reference for daylight but I haven't been able to find the source for this reference. Here it is: " A full-spectrum light source, as recommended, is one with a color temperature close to 5500 K (D55) that is specifically balanced throughout the visible spectrum. This light source is defined as equivalent to daylight in Washington D.C. (Bureau of Standards) in the month of June, during the hours of 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm, when there is a slightly overcast sky; the CRI of this light source should be 90 or higher. " Do any of you know the source for this reference ? 2. I have been trying to understand the difference between a color model and a color space but haven't found any text or any source that provides a good definition for either one or explains both in a manner that is clear and simple to understand. I am trying to understand the following: 2.a. Is Lab a color model or a color space ? 2.b. Is the Munsell Color system a color model ? In this case is the Lab a color space based on the Munsell color system (color model) ? 2.c. Is RGB a color space ? 2.d. How can I draw graphs comparing the color spaces defined by RGB, Adobe RGB and ProColor ? In case I have a raw file created by a 12-bit and another created by a 14-bit camera, how can I draw a graph depicting the difference in the color spaces of these two cameras ? Question on 3D graph app for color space depiction.

Hi, everyone. I am starting a new thread as this is a slightly different subject. Despite my research attempts I haven't been able to find a good 3D app to create graphs of color spaces. I am working with two different color guides. Each has a certain number of color tabs or color samples that I wish to plot on a 3D graph. I would like then to fill the area defined by these points (perhaps with transparent walls) to define a volume or color space defined by these color tabs or samples. After I have created these two graphs I plan to compare both by superimposing one over the other to see which of the two color guides is broader in terms of the color space covered by its color tabs or color samples. I hope I am making sense. Is there a good app anyone can recommend that would accomplish this while being simple to use and inexpensive ? Thank you in advance, Joseph.

Color Discrepencies Between Bridge & Photoshop

Hi list members. I am keen to support Adobe in improving the color matching between Adobe Bridge and Adobe Photoshop.Bridge currently builds sRGB thumbnails of Photoshop files. This can cause Photoshop and Bridge 'views' of the same file to not match.
