Visual Calibration can also be referred to as an oxymoron. It is a contradictory notion that or eyes can be used for precision calibration. How much coffee have you had before you try this, how much alcohol the night before or that afternoon? Are you wearing a red shirt in a bright room, which is now reflecting lots of red onto the display? Using a colorimeter will help you set your device to industry standards for luminance and then you can build your own profile with its own gamut and characteristics, both good and bad, for that display. Then Photoshop will know how your display conveys color meaning. making a profile question

I use a late 2009 27” iMac w 10.9.3 Mavericks. Normally I use “iMac” color profile. I don’t bother with color profiles for my iMac, but today I opened up the Display System Preference. I chose to create a custom monitor profile using the expert mode. Tell me if I am doing this wrong, but I squint my eyes to see the background and foreground apple match, adjusting the handles as I go. I do this for all apple calibration windows, then select slightly less of target gamma than 1.8, then use native white point. Save and assign. But the screen seems to have too much contrast afterwards. I did just as the calibration windows asked by matching the apple and background. Using slightly less than target gamma and native white point. My question is, why does a default “iMac” Profile appear to be better for viewing than a custom profile made w expert mode? John R

I would try again with a Gamma of 2.2 and see if you feel the same way. 1.8 was an old Mac standard and 2.2 is generally accepted. Also using the software is a very subjective way of making a profile vs using a monitor calibrator and it's software. Hi Don- Regarding the re-profiling, I had noticed that displays these days are quite stable. However, we have been monitoring the drift on the displays for the past year and hit our tolerances after about 6 months so we landed on that timeframe for these re-calibrations. Hi Peter, Why are you re-profiling so often? Most modern displays are extremely stable, to the extent that re-reprofiling is likely to introduce more variation than you would notice by leaving the original profile in place and letting the monitors age naturally. The only change due to age I typically observe is a slight reduction in brightness, which is unimportant unless you regularly compare two or more monitors at the same time, side-by-side. BTW, LTNS.
