i1Pro2 Problems

Anybody having problems with their ageing i1Pro2 devices? I’ve got two here that can no longer be used for certifying proofs because they can no longer read the 100 C patch correctly :( The first is a 2012 purchase that has done 5292 strip reads and the lamp lit for 17,771 seconds. The second a 2014 purchase that has done 2070 strip reads and the lamp lit for 5,868 seconds. Another 2014 purchase that has only done 230 strip reads will pass the proofs. So will a 2011 i1 Pro that has done 9,994 strip reads and 31,981 seconds of lamp use! All pass the i1 Diagnostics tests. The proofers are calibrated using an ILS30 but when we are running at high output we can’t afford to waste time pausing and auto reading each proof — so have to switch to the i1s. It looks to me that the older the i1Pro2 gets the worse it gets at measuring 100% cyan — there are no problems with any other patches. Comparing the good and bad devices in ArgyllColorMeter shows that the spectral curve for cyan is an identical shape but offset slightly. Annoying that it only takes 15 months of relatively light use before the these devices become pre-press bricks :( -- Martin Orpen Idea Digital Imaging Ltd

I’ve used the Pelican 1510 for years. It is the largest case that Pelcan makes that can be defined as a carry on. This is essential, have use seen the video’s of the luggage handlers! Usually they tell me to do a gate check but I will just walk onto the plane and they never seemed to stop me. It fits above the seat. I have an Isis, i1 Pro2, Techkon SpectroDens and all the cables. Carrying Case for iSis XL and i1Pro2

Has anyone found a carrying case for traveling with both the iSis2 XL and i1Pro2 that they are happy with? Seems like Pelican, Storm and Lightware don’t offer anything in just the right size. LowePro’s Lens Trekker 600 and Magnum DV 6500 seem worthing considering. Anyone found the perfect travel case for these? Scott Martin www.on-sight.com

FWA in a ColorChecker SG!?

I'm having a discussion with somebody over on Graeme's list for ArgyllCMS. Chad's posted a GCATS file including spectral measurements he made of a ColorChecker SG using a ColorMunki. The alternating white patches around the perimeter all show significant signs of fluorescent brighteners present. They're flat at 86% reflective from 380nm - 420nm, after which reflectively rises very steeply to a peak of about 93% at around 460nm - 470nm, and then a gradual falloff to the red but with another smaller peak at 91% at 660nm. The spectrum isn't particularly smooth. The GCATS file has a calculated XYZ value of 89.467 91.727 91.969 and a Lab value of 96.709 1.8667 -13.059, decidedly very bluish...and I couldn't even find any common RGB spaces that can encode that without clipping the blue channel. I keep thinking that Chad must somehow have gotten saddled with a counterfeit product, as I simply can't imagine something like this coming out of X-Rite. But I've also never seen a ColorChecker SG in person...which is why I'm asking here. Is the ColorChecker SG really this heavily laced with FWA? If so, why on Earth...? If not, I'll tell Chad to get in touch with somebody at X-Rite on the assumption that something's worng with his chart (or ColorMunki or _something_). b&

Hi Mike, I assume that you're talking only about ony imitating the uncoated substrate color and not its lower contrast and saturation. Of course you can do this by editng the white point of the destination color space. But perhaps the goal is unclear to me. Normally one would expect the show-thorough of a warmer (and or darker) stock to influence lighter colors and accept it as a given. The eye takes its cue from the paper white (assuming some paper is visible), so all colors are seen in relation to it. If, on the other hand, the customer is asking for the colors to match in absolute rather than paper-relative terms you have a problem that can't be simply edited away--certainly not for very light colors. Any such attempt would risk some nasty tonal breaks in highlight areas, as the correction would be of increasing severity as coverage decreases to zero. In an inket proofer we would just apply absolute rendering to lay down a correcting tint to the paper white as well, and this is usually accepted, but anything like this on a press sheet would just be seen as scum dot. Device Link or other workflow

Flat tints (ex: 10% Cyan) printing on offset press using a coated stock that falls within SWOP3 (#3 paper) characteristics and the same tint printing on heavily optically brightened uncoated stock will and do look completely different. In the coated printing the 10% cyan looks very yellow compared to the uncoated printing. Customer wants the uncoated printing to look like the coated printing. All I can do at this point is add yellow into the 10% cyan tint; create new CTP and hopefully the uncoated printing will be a better visual match. I'm not too up on Device Link profiles or software to create Device Links; but is there a way to adjust the output files to compensate for this type of situation without having to manually colour correct each and every image? I have to make the adjustment yet keep the initial files intact (as the customer may repurpose or reprint at a later date) and just create a file that can be printed to better match each other in the situation I have mentioned.
