Recreating a 1980s print job

I’ve got to recreate some printed material from the late 1980s. First problem is that I’ve run into is that our ISO standard inks can’t match the yellows and reds on the original. The red I need to hit on press is the one that you’ll find on any old Cromalin — the vivid 100Y 100M patch of the Brunner control strip — which doesn’t seem achievable under an ISO standard world :( Switching Y & M to Yellow C & Rubine Red is getting us close on a GMG proof, but if anybody has any better suggestions for getting a massively saturated red on press I’d be interested to hear about it? Next problem is the separation. The original job was separated on a Scitex system. Under a microscope it looks as if the K stops around 65% giving a TIL something like 100M 100Y 80C 60K. The print job is warm, but no matter where I check with the scope, cyan *always* exceeds black — including all the detail in 100M 100Y saturated reds and in 100Y yellows. Before I start building a custom profile, does anybody know if there were ICC versions of the Scitex profiles available? Or know of any documentation about the K generation and/or characteristics of Scitex separations? Regards -- Martin Orpen Idea Digital Imaging Ltd

Off Topic: Drum Scanning

I have a trove of old ’70’s 4x5 color negs that I would like to try to resurrect. They are on VPS and VPL, and emulsions I can’t remember. Are there any drum scanner operators out there that you could recommend who might do a good job recovering these old negs? Screensharing with colormanagement

Hi list, I have a customer with teams in the USA and Germany working with the same images in photoshop- Both teams have similar EIZO monitors with simlar calibration / profiling settings and similar Photoshop color settings. For some projects, they want to share screens and discuss live color corrections. Does anybody knows a screensharing solution which could be used under this circumstances ? The customer tried Teamviewer an the colors after transmission are way off. As both sides have the same similar Monitors and calibration settings, I would expect, that the resulting monitor profiles are also very similar. (This, I will check later) It may would be enough, if the screen sharing solution just takes the screens from station one and displays it without any color management on station two. The other solution would be, that the monitor-profile of station one is embedded in the screen and than the image is displayed on station two with a match from the embedded monitor profile of station one to the actual system based monitor profile of station two. Message 2 Martin, As you say, you don't want to use Preview to output from your RAW files, and I confess that I have no idea how the software makes it decisions. Nevertheless, you have Capture One, a very capable software, and you ought to be able to achieve virtually any color you want. It might take a bit of work, but you ought to be able to come up with a satisfactory proximation of your Preview output and then save your settings as a preset. What color space are you using in Capture One? >

Preview's raw colour management

If I open a NEF in Preview it will allow me to save out a TIFF tagged with the AdobeRGB profile. There are some colours in these conversions that I like but I can’t seem to match them in Capture One 9 (and I definitely don’t want to use Preview for the conversions). Anybody know how Preview handles colour in raw conversions? Or have links to documentation? -- Martin Orpen Idea Digital Imaging Ltd
