I had the chance to read through this recently updated text and I wanted to share some of my thoughts, here, for those who seek more information about color management. First of all, I found the presentation “readily accessible”, with just the right balance of key concepts and examples. There are a host of relevant figures and screen captures, from Adobe Photoshop and many popular software packages such as X-Rite i1Profiler, which help illustrate the important ideas while adding the value to the discussions. Second, I found the coverage quite up to date with the current status of the industry, both in terms of “hard-copy” publication form and “electronic” form. Print is still not dead while smartphones and the internet are ubiquitous. I appreciated the sections on ISO-13655 M0 vs M1 vs M2 measurements. I also appreciated the sections on lighting and its methods of evaluation. I appreciated the section on calculation of CIE XYZ tri-stimulus values – always a treat for the eye, a must do exercise for my students, when I get the chance, in Excel. There are sections on XML – yes, XML! – “profiling”. Never thought I’d be drawn to “XML color management” one day but it is there, nevertheless, and it is found, according to the author in what’s called ICCmax and Windows’s own WCS which, not too many people were fond of, when it initially came out. Very worth investigating, if only, to possibly work around the weird kind of encoding of ICC profiles, as far as I’m concerned… Third, I wish I would have had access to a text like this when I started my foray into color management, a few years ago. But all I got what “Color reproduction” by Robert Hunt. Not as “readily accessible”. “Thorough” but not for the mainstream, I later found out. Fourth, it’s obvious that efforts were made for the graphics and images to be reproduced accurately 😊 Fifth, my mother tongue is not English but I have to say I did not stumble on any overly complicated technical jargon. I found the text clear to read, unambiguous and pleasant. Overall, a big thumb’s up! Even though I can say I have learned quite a bit about color management on my own, over the years, through my humble experiences and readings, I have to say I have far from exhausted the subject and this book helped fill many of the “little recesses” I still hold about color management. That's it!!! Thank you Paul!!! One of the difficulty with color is the myriad of ways it can be called. In preparation for a class, I got drawn into the "purples". What some authors call "Purple", like in the Munsell system, others call it "Violet". And there's the difference between "Mauve" and "Lilac" and "Lavender". This book, by Moroney, was born out of a public project where visitors were asked to name colors off a web site. imageRunner 5535i vs Phaser 7800GX

Hello, We’re considering replacement of our 10 year old Xerox Phaser 7800GX, but it appears Xerox has not released an newer replacement for their 7800. We do not use a RIP, but have made custom profiles for students to use with our Phaser and have been very happy with it’s excellent color gamut and accuracy as a proof printer. With any new printer we’d prefer one with a somewhat higher print volume and lower consumable costs. We’re looking at Canon’s imageRUNNER 5535i v3 and were wondering if any colorsync list subscribers might have experience with one or both of these printers and could comment on their comparative color gamuts, reliability and ease of profiling. Canon offers a EFI Fiery RIP option, but we’d much prefer either a 3rd party RIP or no RIP at all. Any and all comment regarding these two printers are welcome, especially on the issue of using a RIP or not and if so which would be preferable. Years ago we used the imagePRINT RIP with an Epson 4800 inkjet printer and got good results, but ultimately abandoned it because of a low level of need, high maintenance costs and poor support. The 7800 is and remains a "safe" value, IMO. But I would not mind having the flexibility of a RIP to drive it. I personally tested Canon ImageRunners, with RIPs, in the past and they were quite good. I can't say Canon had a larger gamut than the Xerox but it's output was quite accurate, in terms of average deltas with regards to SWOP2006_C3 which, at the time, was the gamut I was comparing against. The only problem with all three "photocopiers" / printers I tested, at the time, Minolta, Canon and Xerox, was the inability to maintain the calibration over time: as soon as I changed substrate, going from outputting on Fortune Gloss 60 Lbs 13x19 to regular Bond paper Tabloid, the delta Es degraded quite a bit, from 1.85 deltaE to upwards of 3 to 4, and I had to reprofile to get back to 1.85ish. Have you looked at Ricoh? Canon has a powerful RIP of their own. Fiery RIP color management features can be daunting... Xerox's own RIP, I suspect, could be better than Fiery but it's not offered with the 7800... Not that I know of. Certainly the least expensive (but slowest), way would be to not use a Rip. Query about v2 display profiles and Mojave

I recently heard that users migrating to Mojave are being forced to use ICC version 4 profiles for their displays. I'm not in a position to say one way or another about this so I was wondering if this is true, and if so why is the use of version 2 profiles are being deprecated? We ended up changing the display cord and making sure that the signal was HDMI (for our Macintosh.The monitor is now displaying 100% of Adobe RGB according to our Spyder.Thanks to Roger and all who gave us suggestions. Interesting how a simple cord (and even display signal), can cut your display gamut. Randy Zaucha
