Sounds to me like the iPad needs a scheme where the iPad's display were characterised, and the incoming magazine content was also characterised, then a transformation could be made between them that preserved the color distinctions while making the best use of the gamut! You could even standardise it, so that documents and software from different people could all use the same scheme!
This idea reminds me of something I've seen somewhere....
