I think by “printer manufacturer” Graeme is talking about companies like Epson, Canon, HP, Oce, VuTek, Vanguard, etc. These companies want to distribute profiles with their printers so their customers can do great work without the hassle of custom calibration and profiling. Media manufacturers like Legion, Breathing Color, Worthen Industries, etc also have these questions. Some of the affordable licensing options aren’t the highest quality profiles, and some of the highest quality options aren’t very affordable. From what I can see, there’s not a lot of policing going on and quite a few handshake deals. Scott Martin www.on-sight.com Precise color science for printmaking professionals

Hi Graeme,
Not many printers in the US make custom profiles these days. Most just calibrate to G7 and use the standard profiles provided by Idealliance, either GRACoL2006_Coated1v2 or GRACoL2013_CRPC6.
Those printers I know who do make custom profiles happily give them to bonafide customers without charge. It’s a cheap way to make sure customer-supplied files are optimized for their own presses.
Hope this helps,
Don

This may be a bit of long shot, but I am interested in getting a ballpark number on ICC profile licensing cost that many commercial color profiling vendors charge for distributing profiles made with their tools.
i.e. say you are a printer manufacturer and want to distribute profiles to your users, what sort of costs are you likely to be up for ?

Thanks for any hints or pointers,
