Excluding print media, if no one viewing your calibration work is calibrated, what value is your calibration?
If your media product has no defined color encoding, then even if someone wanted to go to the trouble of seeing what you intended, has no hope. You're outputting random rubbish. If on the other hand your output is encoded to a standard that display makers at least cross check against (ie. sRGB), then on average everyone will see roughly what you intended, and someone who was prepared to go to more trouble can see exactly what you intended.
