It doesn't take a lot to maintain a PC, just common sense. It's less effort than it appears to be. Graeme, It wasn't the kids pc I was talking about. It was IT's. This is essentially the problem. You have to do a LOT of homework or hire a expert like yourself or Matt to maintain a PC. I don't have the time or inclination for this. I just want to focus on the end product rather than the tool. This is not a religious argument. I resisted the attraction for many years but i eventually caved into the seduction of Macs. I just find that you plug a Mac in follow the prompts (which are written in a language I understand) and go for it. Every time I look for help on a PC I end up with more questions and a lot of wasted time. Enough already. Surrender. Enjoy. That's my motto now. That's sort of the story though. If you leave it with kids, it will fill up with rubbish, and there is lots of rubbish waiting to be installed and slow your machine down. Keep the rubbish off, and a PC will be just as fast and long lasting as as anything else, and with the potential for cheaper HW upgrades.
