Found my problem: "proofing" was not showing up when attempting to create custom soft proof. I had to work backwards on PS CS3 to find where 'proofing" was located. All is well, for now. I have been successfully bringing custom printer profiles into "view". However, today, I don't know what I am doing wrong. Just cannot save the custom profile so it can be used in PS CS 5.
Target printed with Adobe Color Printer Utility. Read with i1Profiler v1.3.1. Appears profile is successfully created.
However, I cannot "save" the profile for use in view>proof setup. Which means, I cannot see the image file with the custom .icc profile I just created.
The profile does show up in colorsync>profiles. Therefore I think it is a real valid profile. Is this an issue with PS CS5, version 12.0.4 x64?
As I wrote, I used to be able to save the new profiles.

Seem the .icc profiles are not valid.
Must be something I am doing in i1Profiler v1.3.1
it has changes, like using the new i1Pro 2. Guess I better read more on this, and communicate with x-rite.

Encoding in an L*a*b* space does not imply that you have to gamut map in that space, so don't look to the ICC Lab encoding PCS as the culprit for such color problems.
The gamut limits of ICC Lab PCS encoding can be an issue at times though.
