I'm sure I'm not the only one on this list who's seen Apple's announcement of a refresh of the iMac line, including "P3 color gamut" displays. I had to look that one up. The blue primary is basically the same as Adobe RGB. P3's red primary is significantly more saturated than Adobe RGB's, but Adobe RGB's green primary is significantly more saturated than P3's. Details start about halfway down the page here: http://dot-color.com/category/color-gamut-standards/ Is there anybody here who's had a chance to get some hands-on experience with one (including spectrophotometric measurements) and is at liberty to share such an experience? The marketing materials definitely hit all the right notes, but that's marketing's job.... Also, off-topic...does anybody know if the iMacs would take 16 Gbyte memory modules when such become available? 32 Gbytes is very good, but I can imagine someday wanting 64, and wanting it before the rest of the hardware is obsolete.... b&
It will be interesting to see what these new iMacs profile out to. ___________________ Steve Kornreich http://www.kuau.com

I think only the Big Macs have non-soldered RAM. Edmund ᐧ On Sat, Oct 17, 2015 at 12:25 AM, Derek Lambert <csync@colorforest.net> wrote:

True, 21” iMac soldered ram. I'm just wondering if it's a better buy to get the quad core version of the Mac Pro for less money and keep using my aging NEC PA30W monitor. The iMacs are usually a good price performance point, but I have never seen any Mac upgrade really work for me. A bit of RAM or a drive may make more sense. Edmund ᐧ On Sat, Oct 17, 2015 at 3:00 AM, Steven Kornreich <steve@kuau.com> wrote:

Huh? The cheapest Mac Pro is $3,000. The most expensive base-model iMac is $2,300. Configure said iMac with more RAM than the Pro and the top-option CPU and it's still only at $2,750. Max out all the options on the iMac and you're at $4,150; do the same with the Pro and it's over twice as much. And the iMac has a display whose specs, on paper, are awfully respectable; I don't think Apple is even selling standalone displays any more, so no Pro is sold with one. There's lots to be said in favor of the Pro...but "less money" is pretty emphatically not one of them. b&
Yes. But Pro comes with DUAL GPU and Xeon CPU. That makes a HUGE difference. ------ Sent from Apple touchscreen device Best Regards, Derek Lambert

Looks like the new 27” iMacs accept 64GB RAM: http://www.macrumors.com/2015/10/13/27-inch-imac-supports-64-gb-ram/ Scott Martin www.on-sight.com

Sweet -- thanks! $1200 is an awful lot of money to spend on that much RAM today, but knowing that it'll be an option in the future just made my purchase that much more likely. So...back to the original topic...anybody actually seen one of the wide-gamut iMac displays? Even better, has anybody profiled one? Maybe somebody @apple.com could grab an i1 Pro and post a LUT profile for us to examine? b&
