30 lpi silkscreen w/ DTP 20: Averaging suggestions?
Hello Group, I was curious if anyone had a good suggestion for averaging the Xrite DTP20's readings for a low 30lpi halftone color target made with 4 color screenprinting? I do know Xrite's newest solution has an average feature, as do some older programs like ProfileMaker. The Pulse ColorElite does not, however, I could average using ColorPort, taking individual numerical readings and averaging with Excel or similar. I'm hoping there is a utility or program that does support the Xrite DTP20, allows targets to be read multiple times to compensate for low res color swatches. Any suggestions other than buying a new CMM setup or taking the laborious route of manual readings? :) many thanks Andre Ribuoli www.ribuolidigital.com On Mon, Sep 19, 2011 at 3:01 PM, <colorsync-users-request@lists.apple.com>wrote:

Hello,
There used to be a bit of free Gretag software called 'Eye One share', which allowed one to measure the ambient light - using an Eye One Pro - and display it's spectrum as a graph (spikes and all!) X-rite no longer seem to offer this. Does anyone know of an alternative (preferably free!) that will run under Mac osx Snow Leopard?
Thanks,
Rob.

Ambient light measurement hasn't been supported for some time now. Doesn't work even under Mac OS 10.6. XRite has been saying that functionality will be replaced by a "successor product". i1Profiler has some basic ambient light functionality that I could see expanded should they have the interest to do so. That and some good gamut mapping/comparison capabilities would be nice to see....
It's nice to know we have some options with GUIs. How about scanner profiling - does anyone have a favorite scanner profiling solution that's 10.7 compatible? This is on the the last things holding me back. I just don't want to run a virtual box for this purpose.

I wouldn't think there'd be much need for averaging with the DTP20 Pulse since it's already taking multiple readings per patch and sort of averaging on the fly. I'd just make sure you're using a chart with the largest patch size that the DTP20 can accommodate. You may have to use ColorPort for that since I doubt Pulse Color Elite allows you to create custom charts. Thank you Terence and Sebastian for the advice. I will definitely use the averaging feature. In fact I just purchased the XRite i1Publish Pro.... mainly because of the low rez target and averaging feature. The DTP20 had no options, other than manual readings... Thanks! Andre Ribuoli www.ribuolidigital.com
Hi Andre, averaging is always a good idea. I usually measure 6-10 Targets with basICColor catch pro/control, then I use the build in averaging feature to generate a first average. You can refine the result by using this data as a reference in the catch control feature to sort out the most erratic measurements. By using only the "best" datasets of your initial measurements you should get very good results... And maybe Karl can tell us something about the future ( just the future of catch ;-) Cheers Sebastian -- Sebastian Schroeder xkontor media solutions Phone +49 171 4133922 -- SEBASTIAN SCHROEDER // XKONTOR MEDIA SOLUTIONS FRIEDENSALLEE 52A // 22765 HAMBURG // MOBIL 0171. 41 33 922 SCHROEDER@XKONTOR.COM // FON 040. 30 39 18 61 // FAX -62 USt.-ID DE214706676 Am 19.09.2011 um 22:00 schrieb andre ribuoli:
Hello Group,
I was curious if anyone had a good suggestion for averaging the Xrite DTP20's readings for a low 30lpi halftone color target made with 4 color screenprinting? I do know Xrite's newest solution has an average feature, as do some older programs like ProfileMaker.
The Pulse ColorElite does not, however, I could average using ColorPort, taking individual numerical readings and averaging with Excel or similar. I'm hoping there is a utility or program that does support the Xrite DTP20, allows targets to be read multiple times to compensate for low res color swatches.
Any suggestions other than buying a new CMM setup or taking the laborious route of manual readings? :)
many thanks Andre Ribuoli www.ribuolidigital.com
Andre, X-Rite had a application called ToolCrib that allowed measuring arbitrary targets and saving the output in various formats. You could measure the target several times and average in MeasureTool or another application. Measuretool supports weighted averaging in demo mode, useful to reduce the influence of outlier measurements. I recommend measuring the target multiple times, because you are trying to compensate for ink density differences across the patch area. Simply reading a single area multiple times won't help here. Cheers, Ethan
