I guess my question is, has anyone found a scientifically consistent way to get around this “appearance” match and simply set the output conditions for linear? I have not seen or read this as an explicit workflow in my research . . .

As others have aptly indicated already, there is no such thing as a way to get around "appearance" in ICC/CIE color matching. Have you found what you were looking for already or are you still pursuing your experiments? Best / Roger
