ICC profile distribution licensing costs (Graeme Gill)
I think I miss-read your post. On re-reading it, I believe what you’re asking is what do the software manufacturers (e.g. X-Rite) charge? My understanding is that there’s only a charge if a printer (or color management consultant) sells a profile, not if they give it away, which would further explain why printers give them away to their customers. Did I understand you correctly this time? ************************** Don Hutcheson President HutchColor, LLC 908-500-0341 don@hutchcolor.com **************************

This may be a bit of long shot, but I am interested in getting a ballpark number on ICC profile licensing cost that many commercial color profiling vendors charge for distributing profiles made with their tools.
i.e. say you are a printer manufacturer and want to distribute profiles to your users, what sort of costs are you likely to be up for ?

Thanks for any hints or pointers,

That is what I understand from xrite’s license agreement. Essentially they are saying this. 1. You can give away your profiles if they are connected to selling your product (paper, printers, ink, etc). 2. You can make profiles for customers as long as you have some basic 1-1 consultation/interaction with them. (Aka, don’t do this for too cheap and in a totally automated way!) 3. If you just post a bunch of ICC profiles on the web for people to buy at say $15/per with paypal checkout, Xrite isn’t going to be happy. tldr: xrite wants to have the monetary value of your ICC profile end-products not deflate too much or compete with them selling more spectros to individual photo labs. The want to control the flow of digital products created by their tools and customers. Legal gray area in my opinion. Epson doesn’t own the distribution rights of the prints I make out of their printer for example . . . . Best, Walker

Here’s how XRite has explained their licensing to me: 1) Consultants can make and deliver profiles created onsite. 2) Consultants can make profiles remotely only as an extension of onsite services. Remote profiling to the general public is prohibited. 3) Printer and media OEMs *may not* distribute profiles without additional licensing. Some companies allow full distribution rights for profiles created with their software. Of course the rules and their policing are two different things. I think Graeme is just trying to get a feel for profile licensing costs. Scott Martin www.on-sight.com Precise color science for printmaking professionals
Thanks for the clarification Scott. Best regards, Walker
