Seeking advice prior to upgrading camera and scanner calibration tools (HCT)
Hi, Once again left with tools that are incompatible with newer Mac and OS… Amongst others, BasiCColor Scan PPC is not supported by OS 10.8. The good surprise though, is that the calibration package I have just purchased to calibrate my monitors seems to offer a free scanner and camera profiling option ! (but is it really operational at no additional cost, I mean without having a measuring tool other than the monitor puck plugged in?). However, my Hutchcolor HCT target (on Fuji Velvia) is unfortunately not supported by X-Rite i1Profiler. So, as far as I can see, I'm left with those two options: — Purchase a new IT8 target for the X-Rite software (no idea of the cost). — Upgrade BasiCColor Scan (already an upgrade from Profile City ICC Scan) to BasiCColor Input (no idea of the cost either). I came to like the target produced by Don Hutcheson. It is sort of wide gamut and extended range, compared to standard Kodak IT8 targets. Whether that alone makes better profiles, I assume it does, especially since I shot mainly Fuji Velvia in a former life, but I don't really know. My target is now maybe 10 years old though (and so are my slides), but it was used no more than 4 or 5 times and stored in a dark cool place. BasiCColor still lists the HCT target. Their older software made good profiles for the Eversmart scanner. I now wish to calibrate my Canon 1Ds III as well (with the included Hutcheson Crystal archive print I guess, also 10 years old). In the other hand, X-Rite software is certainly more convenient to use (unlike BasiCColor: one does it all and no need to register a machine specific TAN number that gets lost with every hardware upgrade or system renewal, though the BasiCColor team has always been helpful I must say). X-Rite i1 DisplayPro is the best Monitor profiler I have used so far, and allowed me to obtain a pretty good match of MBPr, NEC PA271 wide gamut and Lacie 321 standard gamut, all with specific backlighting options. My understanding is that one of these days we may see the HCT transparency scanner target supported in the new i1Profiler, but I have no idea of when or how. For now, I'm not buying any X-Rite software until this happens. I'd prefer to use the HCT target and have someone else with the appropriate legacy software generate the profile. For the number of times I'd need this particular feature until X-Rite, in its infinite wisdom, decides to "seat" it, this is the more sensible route; but others of course would have varying needs. Respectfully suggest don't don't don't go to 10.8! Benefits of 10.6.4…….continue to use all equipment and software I already have: Camera tethering, profiling my equipment, and printing. I do have 10.8.4 as well as 10.6.8 on one of the MacBook Pro 8,3 17inch non-glare display, computers. 10.6.8 is used for all digital imaging. Further I like the features available for the pad, expanding and contracting screen. Additionally, my accounting software works on 10.6.8 (not on 10.8.4……would have to repurchase software to run on 10.8.4) The second MacBook Pro 8,3 17inch non-glare display has 10.8.4. All my digital imaging software does work on the second MacBook Pro 8,3 17inch non-glare display with 10.8.4. Just simply more comfortable with 10.6.8. You will choose what is best for you. Lots of input will come forward for you to digest. Oh…….10.9.xx is expected. So, tell me, what's the point of leaving something you know is right for you. I am staying with what is right for me.
