We installed the first of our Epson 4900's and I have a question about the print settings. Does anyone know what is the difference between "Fine - 1440 dpi" and "SuperPhoto - 1440 dpi"? The manual is completely useless. Obviously the SuperPhoto is supposed to be a better print quality, but what is it doing differently? Thanks. Ken Fleisher

Just a guess... but on other models such differences are typically one prints at 720x1440 and the other prints at 1440x1440. These newer generation Epsons are fast enough that I almost always use them on the highest available setting. Even if I can't tell the difference in printed output on a given type of job, the higher res settings seem prone to fewer errors. If during a job one nozzle gives out, it will cause very noticeable banding in the lowest res output. As you go up in res setting, that single nozzle jet plays less and less of a factor in overall output. You will rarely even see the effect of a single dead nozzle if you're printing on the highest resolution setting. Ken, You're right - the manual could be more informative about what these settings really mean. That said, the difference between "Fine" and "Super Photo" means that for printing photos you should get a higher quality print from "Super". Now, how that happens under the hood I'm not sure, and the difference it makes to perceptible image quality is very, very subtle. As the dpi is the same, any difference doesn't come from more or less dpi. That leaves differences in the screening and dithering algorithms, and perhaps print speed (but here I'm not sure, because print speed is also a user-controllable option apart from these resolution settings), producing a subtely "tighter" result from the selection of Super. I just leave mine on Super and don't even think about it. Right, the variables here are print resolution along both x and y axis and the number of passes. The geek in me wishes Epson and the rest of them would spell these out like: "1440 x 2880 8 passes" as some RIPs have done for years.
