An agreed upon deltaE value (and a formula for that deltaE report). The distance (difference) between two colors. I don't believe there's much debate that a dE value far below dE of 1, as I provided for the two sRGB values, are a far smaller color difference the human eye can see. There is some debate for good reason what values appear differently between two colors. Andrew, Seems like the axe being ground through this "color" parsing is a discontentment that display marketing should implicitly agree with the reckoning that a color doesn't count unless it's defined as distinct under a dE reckoning. At the time the convention was established for counting colors in the sense of marketing speak, the ICC was just being formed. None of the tools you refer to existed, and it was still not uncommon for color computer graphic to offer purely indexed color. Ok, so you have a more specific definition of color based on ICC. No, that's not my point whatsoever. I'm getting to a point where I'm not willing to attempt to explain to you the colorimetric facts and further. For a deltaE metric, we need TWO color values. Andrew, The gap here is that you feel the term "color" has to mean a distinguishable measures under your pedagogical / doctrinal system — which no doubt is of the highest quality —and I think term "color" mean — in context of the original quaery— a stimulus produced by a display device according to its input data format. Hey Roger, The threshold of differentiation is, I suspect, different for different people, taking into consideration the brain as "computer" or perceiver and the eye as camera or sensor. Environment will also be a big factor--or how the colors are presented: two patches close in color next to each other will be more easily distinguishable that those colors presented amongst other disparate colors.
