Martin, it could be good troubleshooting to send Andrew a profile that?s not working on your system and see if it's working on his.
Hi Scott Yes, I?ll send Andrew a small scanner profile via email. My testing shows that the versions of Photoshop 2024 and the Beta release that were updated in the last few days are unable to preview or assign scanner profiles that use Lab PCS. Versions prior to this work as expected. I noticed this because I was able to assign profiles to images on a scanning job that I was working on on December 1st. When I tried to pick up where I left off on the same job this morning it was impossible to assign the profiles that were been used without a problem less than a week ago. I tried another Mac which has the same version of PS and it won?t work either. Like yours, my scanner profiles have been built in i1Profiler ? so this could be vendor specific, but I think that it is more likely something to do with the Lab PCS. Cheers ? Ever noticed how some printer profiles show up everywhere *except* the print dialog box where you need them the most? If you use special characters in printer profile names like parenthesis “()", they used to show up in the print dialog but don’t any more. My big beef is that Adobe refuses to support Lab color mode in Illustrator, and doesn’t support decimals for Lab values in Photoshop. This would make a massive difference for a lot of my clients. Especially annoying in pre-press workflows that Illustrator doesn’t support decimals for custom Lab spot colours. I can understand why they wouldn’t bother in Photoshop, but Illustrator? It means that every custom colour on packaging jobs has to be looked up, verified and then either added to the rip colour libraries or manually overridden on every proof. This wastes so much time. — Martin Orpen
Hey Martin! Yes, and Illustrator just converts your Lab values to the Document color space (CMYK or RGB), clipping and all. Sigh. I don’t understand why Photoshop wouldn’t support Lab decimals. In some cases, changing a single Lab integer can change the RGB value by 3-5 points - a big jump! We need more precision. We’ve got to stop using RIP color libraries and just be able to define color with precision from the beginning. Scott Martin www.on-sight.com Imaging Science for Art

Meanwhile, Lightroom Classic does show Lab values with decimals and doesn’t truncate the values ( of “Imaginary” colors that fall outside of it) to +/- 127 like Photoshop. I’ve begged the PS team to implement the same scale in Photoshop since Lightroom Classic could support Lab values, and it fell on deaf ears. Why can’t two Adobe apps with the same processing engine share the same scales? So, we need a massive number of Photoshop users to keep making the request. https://community.adobe.com/t5/photoshop-ecosystem-ideas/how-do-i-write-a-feature-request/idi-p/12384447 Andrew Rodney http://www.digitaldog.net/
Yes good point Andrew. I use those Lab values in Lightroom everyday and find the one decimal to be perfect for image development. Two decimals would be better in InDesign, PS and Illustrator. InDesign is the best citizen as it already does this. And yes, “over-range” lab values are real and needed! I photographed some artwork yesterday that used over-range vales...
