What PC do you use for digital imaging?
What PC do you use for digital imaging? I need to chose a PC for digital imaging. I have been Mac for years. What Apple has done, eliminating the 17 inch display completely, and charging $90.00 for the non glare 15 inch display, has frosted me. I do have the 17 inch non glare MacBook Pro available to me. However, I believe it's time to leave the Apple family! My requirements are non glare 17 inch display…… almost anything else would fall in place. No SSD's. Thank all of you in advance. David B. David, Just because they announce new machines doesn't mean the existing models have stopped working! Just add some RAM ($100) to your current Macbook Pro, and you will have a speed boost. Moving to a PC if you are a Mac person is a major hassle, especially if your habits are set and you have to do your own maintenance. I do think that Apple's apparent decision to drop the 17" shows they are out of touch with their user base, since another photographer complained to me yesterday. The trick is to never upgrade the OS is what I was going to write - And that is especially true for us on this list with printer drivers, instrument drivers, production profiling software. Edmund On Tue, Jun 12, 2012 at 12:44 PM, edmund ronald <edmundronald@gmail.com>wrote:

SSD's have acquired a bit of a reputation for quitting without warning though. Most hard drives give you a bit of notice. Graeme Gill.
David, I have to use both PCs and Macs at my workplace but I know what I prefer - my Mac. I have a 17" MacBook Pro that is almost 6 years old, still runs CS5, testing CS6. Starting to SCREAM under a load. I am disappointed that they haven't produced a new 17" as it a good size to plug my EIZO monitor into. I don't think the screens were ever intended for accurate colour work so it's just not a factor. I gave up trying to profile it almost immediately but it's a good size for a second screen while at the limit of portability. Accurate colour requires MUCH better hardware. I have PCs at home. They're for the kids. I've NEVER seen a PC last as long as a Mac in terms of utility. At my college we even have a PowerMac 8500 running OS9 attached to a Scitex Smartscanner! Museum piece I know. Slow as a wet weekend but they just won't die. Load scans. Go away and make a batch of wine. Beautiful. The PCs that the IT dept give us start grinding to a halt after a couple of years. Registry filling up I am told. Hit start button, go away, make another batch of wine. Mark. On 12/06/2012, at 5:22 PM, "Millers' Photography L.L.C." <digitalimaging@dnmillerphoto.com> wrote:

I have a HP DV5000 that I picked up from Costco that is now 7 years old (Intel Core 2 Duo) and it's still a very viable machine. Is it a rocket? No. Can I work in PhotoShop with an external monitor? Yes. I recently replaced it with a HP DV7 17" laptop, 4 cores (8 with hyper threading) and 8GB of RAM for $800 (about a third of a 17" MacBook Pro at the time). It's great, can be profiled and is quite fast. I've got four almost ten year old servers running that run like champs for what they do. The key is take care of the *computer* (not Mac or PC). Sometimes a reload of the OS is a good way to clean out the cobwebs. If you are looking for a desktop then there are a number of choices depending on what you are looking for. Video cards galore, interfaces up the wazoo, plethora of processors. Adding the SSD will breathe new life into any computer. You should give it serious consideration. Any more Mac vs. PC is simply a religious war that will never be won by either side. As a practical matter maintaining a PC isn't much difficulty. The switch can be a bit odd at first. There are some things that Windows does that are weird but can be changed. I switch between Windows XP, Vista, 7, Server 2003, Server 2008, Mac OS X 10.5.x, 10.6.x, 10.7.x several times a day. Once you get familiar with Windows it's not a big deal. I started with a Mac 512 way, way back. Went all the way to a SE/30 and Windows 3.1 For Workgroups for prepress in 1994 and have used every OS release from Apple and MSFT ever since. Once you learn how each one works it's just not that bad. And really just about everything digital imaging/prepress that you want to do on a Mac can be done equally as well on a PC. It's all done in Adobe apps anyways and cross platform there is a huge amount of feature parity. I can't think of a instance where there isn't. Which is why I say huge and not total ;). If you're smart about what you do on a Mac, PC or Linux box they will last a good long time. Oh, most Mac's and a number of similar PC's are made on the same factory floor over in China. Don't be too fooled by "Apple's superior hardware" since it's all standard components. Since you're in Bellingham and I'm south of you it's a local call if you ever want to discuss hardware. And let's call a spade a spade; a computer is just a tool. The skill and craft come from the guy with opposable thumbs and the ability to reason "why". Not exactly. Two computer models can have very different designs - one very elegant and the other not so much - and be manufactured in the same facility. Here's a great quote from Apple's Jony Ive, during yesterday's keynote presentation, as he was describing Apple's new breakthrough laptop: the Next Generation MacBook Pro: "By not purchasing standard parts, but by designing and engineering components from the ground up, we can create a product that is more elegant and it's more efficient." If you're interested, the video is here and the quote is ~39:15 into the video. Apple WWDC 2012 Keynote Address June 2012 See the streaming video from the WWDC 2012 keynote. Watch video Enjoy, Jim

That's sort of the story though. If you leave it with kids, it will fill up with rubbish, and there is lots of rubbish waiting to be installed and slow your machine down. Keep the rubbish off, and a PC will be just as fast and long lasting as as anything else, and with the potential for cheaper HW upgrades. Graeme Gill.
Graeme, It wasn't the kids pc I was talking about. It was IT's. This is essentially the problem. You have to do a LOT of homework or hire a expert like yourself or Matt to maintain a PC. I don't have the time or inclination for this. I just want to focus on the end product rather than the tool. This is not a religious argument. I resisted the attraction for many years but i eventually caved into the seduction of Macs. I just find that you plug a Mac in follow the prompts (which are written in a language I understand) and go for it. Every time I look for help on a PC I end up with more questions and a lot of wasted time. Enough already. Surrender. Enjoy. That's my motto now. It doesn't take a lot to maintain a PC, just common sense. It's less effort than it appears to be. I have been following this thread and can't resist sharing a story. A long time ago I worked for a high tech company that make hardware and software for the printing industry. It has long since been bought out by a multinational company. We had both Macs and PC in the company, but the IT department was very partial to the PC and did a very poor job of supporting Macs. Because of this one other Mac guru and myself got a lot of phone calls asking for Mac support. I was not paid to give Mac support, so I complained to the IT department to please give better Mac support so that people did not call me. The head of IT dismissed my plea and told me to please stop complaining. I then sent a copy of this email thread to the Chief of Operations. The following emails were sent back and forth and I was copied on them. Email to head of IT from COO: Why do you not have a Mac support person on your staff? Reply from head of IT: Only 1% of my requests come from Mac users. I should not hire a person for so few calls. COO reply to head of IT: How many Macs and how many PC's do we have in the company? Reply from head of IT: We have about 350 Macs and about 600 PC's. COO reply to head of IT: If this is true we should do one of two things...#1...Buy all Macs and fire all of the IT staff since Macs don't require any support. OR #2 We should hire a Mac expert in IT since people don't call you for support since your support is so poor. The head of IT hired a Mac expert the next week. I love it when people supply their own ammunition to shoot themselves in the head. I stopped getting calls for Mac support. Ray M.

Macs are marvelous, except you know, when they aren't. Like when you expect your printer driver to do the same thing two years in a row, or expect to see the same ports eg. firewire or DVI on the side of the machine two years in a row.
