I played with demo too (waiting for my dongle) and I did not noticed this. I am using temp 5850, 2.2 gamma and 120L target values as I don't work in the total darkness. I mostly use ColorEyes. Profiles were wery similar. Best Regards, Derek Lambert On May 18, 2011, at 6:08 PM, Louis Dina <lou@loudina.com> wrote:
I have a few preliminary observations after playing with the interface of i1Publish (I downloaded and ran in demo mode, v1.0). I think the interface might actually be pretty nice after one gets used to it. I wanted to get a feel for the program and see what features were available and/or missing that are in some of the legacy programs.
I'll comment on the monitor profiling module, since the demo version actually let me build, save and load a profile on my Mac. First, I was disappointed that there is no ability to set a target black luminance (at least that I could find). The black luminance is critical to a good monitor to print match and has been available in other software for years (Color Eyes, and I think BasicColor too).
I have ProfileMaker and i1Match software loaded on my computer. Both of those programs give me very similar results in terms of monitor profile quality, luminance, etc. Here's what threw me.....I used i1Publish to build a monitor profile and it instructed me to crank the backlight of my LCD monitor WAY UP (exact same target settings as I used both PMP and i1Match....5500K, 2.2gamma, 80 cd/m2). The resulting profile gave me a display that was a LOT brighter than both the other programs (all three are Xrite programs, of course). Maybe it's because it is a demo version? I'm not exactly new to this stuff. I don't think I did anything wrong, but I decided to repeat the process in all three software packages to be sure. I got the same results. Competing LUT loaders perhaps? Any ideas? I'd expect subtle differences, but this ain't subtle.
i1Match gives me a nice report immediately after the profile is built, with target and actual values for white and black luminance, gamma, color temp, etc. I didn't see any such info available from i1Publish.
I haven't built any printer profiles yet, and am not even sure it will let me build and save a profile in demo version. I mainly wanted to look at the available bells and whistles.
BTW, thanks for all the responses to my initial query. Hot topic!
