Suggestions for a color accurate image browser
I am wanting suggestions for an image browser that can view thumbnails of ProPhoto PSD files and match the Photoshop CS5.1 view. I like using Adobe Bridge for image browsing, but the sRGB versions of the ProPhoto images are just too different for the thumbnails I am viewing to be of any use to me. 1 -Adobe Bridge CS5.1 Only Displays sRGB thumbnails of the ProPhoto images. (same deal with Bridge CS6 apparently) 2- Finder (10.6.8) Displays PSD files differently than either bridge or Photoshop CS5.1 3 - iPhoto Displays thumbnails matching Adobe Bridge. (guessing sRGB thumbnail thing again) Appreciate any suggestions / ideas around this. Thanks Peter Miles Mac Pro, OS 10.6.8, Eizo, color managed work station
If you choose high-quality thumbnail from under the Thumbnail Quality icon, they should be color-managed. Mine are.

Specify thumbnail quality You can specify that Adobe Bridge display embedded, high-quality, or 1:1 previews of image thumbnails for individual folders of images. For faster browsing, choose a folder and then select the Browse Quickly By Preferring Embedded Imagesbutton in the Adobe Bridge application bar. To display higher-quality thumbnail previews, click theOptions For Thumbnail Quality And Preview Generation button in the Adobe Bridge application bar and choose one of the following: Prefer Embedded (Faster) to use the low-resolution thumbnails embedded in the source file. These thumbnails aren't color managed. This option is equivalent to choosing Browse Quickly By Preferring Embedded Images. High Quality On Demand to use embedded thumbnails until you preview an image, at which time Adobe Bridge creates color-managed thumbnails generated from the source files. Always High Quality to always display color-managed thumbnails for all images. Always High Quality is the default quality setting. Generate 100% Previews to create 100% previews of images in the background for Loupe and Slideshow views. This option speeds loupe and slide show operations but uses more disk space and slows initial browsing. See Use the Loupe tool and View images as a slide show. Thanks Gordon. Hmm... Version 5.1 does not have those icons that are refereed to in the text that I can see.. I can not speak for Bridge version 6 or CC. But for version 5.1 I can confirm whats on the adobe forum (see snip below). That bridge previews are in the sRGB color space. Bridge previews of my ProPhotoRGB images might be color managed, but in Bridge 5.1 they are a color managed conversion of my ProPhotoRGB images into the sRGB colorspace for thumbnails. I can confirm this for my self by going to my ~HomeDirectory/Library/caches/Adobe/Bridge CS5/Cache, locate the cached thumbnails for my ProPhotoRGB images. If I open them in photoshop, It warns me they have an embedded sRGB profile. I am working with highly saturated microscope images using rheinberg illumination. You can see the color differences between bridge view and photoshop that I am getting here http://tinyurl.com/n79lt83 . I have located the corresponding thumbnail in my Bridge cache folder and can confirm that the bridge thumbnail for this image is sRGB. Further the photoshop and bridge views match if I soft proof sRGB. Can anyone with Bridge CC or 6 confirm that they are seeing their ProphotoRGB image Bridge Cache files are in the sRGB color space. Or are your Bridge 6 or Bridge CC Cache files for your ProphotoRGB images also in the ProPhoto colorspace? I'd love to find a way to get bridge to display these microscope images the same color as they are when opened in photoshop. Regards Peter Miles snip from Adobe Forums... "For anyone following this thread, just a heads-up for future reference. It's been confirmed all previews in Bridge are in fact in sRGB. It's a bit surprising, but apparently true. More details at this thread." (http://forums.adobe.com/message/5180301#5180301)

Just a note if you are looking at the file above. I just opened this image on my iMac monitor and see much less color difference than when viewed on the Eizo 241W. View it on a wide gamut monitor if you can. Regards Peter Miles
Peter, I see that you are right. I was assuming you meant that the preview image was assigned an sRGB profile, but it is converted to sRGB, so out-of-gamut colors are lost. And this is with high-quality thumbnails enabled. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/23040658/Screen%20shot%202013-11-12.jpg shows a screen cap of the following: 1) Top-left: A ProPhoto RGB image with intense reds, in Photoshop CC. 2) Top-right: A duplicate of the same image, ASSIGNED to sRGB, in Photoshop CC. 3) Bottom-left: A duplicate of the same image, CONVERTED to sRGB, in Photoshop CC. 4) Bottom-right: Bridge CS 5.1 preview of the original ProPhoto RGB image, with gamut identical to the sRGB-converted one. Hi you could try to make your own ProPhoto thumbnail images using something like Photoshop > File > Scripts > Image processor and replace them in the Cache? Bit of a faff but would probably work? Best Matthew On 12 Nov 2013, at 21:04, Peter Miles <P.Miles@massey.ac.nz> wrote:

Ah. Well there is a way, I think, but I'm not too familiar with it. If you drag-drop a bunch of images onto the Preview icon (or perhaps a folder), Preview will open them all into one window. You can then scroll through thumbnails of the images and select individual images to view in the main window area. I think there is also some control in the prefs over opening into thumbs, etc. Not sure if it will fit the bill, but it might. Steve
Hi Steve Thanks for the advise! Have now got color correct thumbnails ! (within the limit of the monitor) Thanks Peter Steve Upton wrote...
